Sprung mass is a bad thing
wide stance
This can be a good thing but also a bad thing. It's never always a good thing.
stiffened suspension
You don't want stiffer suspension. The suspension is only there to support the car. Stiffened suspension will only ruin the ride. There are other methods to improving roll and pitch.
low COG
Although typically a good thing going too far will bring you lower than your roll centre and will actually make it worse than it was before.
negative camber
There is a fine point between getting the maximum from your tyres and plummeting over the edge. After a certain point more camber will make the handling worse, almost like driving on narrow tyres.
they can all only make the handling better in my book.

I'm only discussing the handling here, the ride is a completely different thing, and I'll be the first to admit that it's f**ked, pretty sure going over Niagra Falls in a barrel would be more comfortable!
Tru dat, but I can't see there being a huge different between my wheel with its thin spokes and low-profile tyre and the original chunky wheels with their huge tyres. If I get chance I'll weigh them.
When is it a bad thing?
I've already got front and rear upper strut bars, they were fitted before the silliness began and they improved the roll no end. (I'm considering removing the front one to try and stop it understeering, although my budget ditch-finder tyres probably don't help there...)
The stiffness is purely because of the lowness and I do want stiffer suspension, when you've got as much arch gap as I haven't, you need the suspension as stiff as you can get it, if I had it as close to the arches as I wanted, I'd need a solid bar welding in ;] I know the stiffer the suspension the less the wheel is able to follow the contours of the road, but for tarmac driving, the stiffness isn't really a problem since the car doesn't get bounced around as much as it would say off-road.
Roll centre I have no idea about, I know the concept of it, but not entirely how it affects a vehicle's dynamics.
Yep, I like camber as much as the next guy, but there's a limit to where it just looks stupid and dangerous (there's usually a Dubber involved...) but I'd like to think I'm still on the right side of that limit. The outside of my tyres are only just off the floor (from what I can remember), so when loaded up in a corner the whole tyre should have a nice even contact patch. And since it's a GX, I don't have any problems with grip when accelerating in a straight line ![Big Grin](images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
I'm not professing to have made some ultimate track weapon, or even saying it's as good as it COULD be, but it IS better than stock.
Sometime I wish I'd done an engineering degree at uni, much more fun than video games :|

There is such a thing as too wide, take the Clio V6 for example. Terrible handling car purely because it's too short. Saying that you can't really make the Impreza that wide.

A vehicles roll centre (RC) is the theoretical point (vertical height relative to road) around which the vehicle will roll, either front or rear. Intersection of these points from rear to front determines roll axis.
The angle of the lower control arm relative to the ground is also part of the calculation on MacPherson strut equiped vehicles. Excessive lowering will almost always invert this angle leading to more roll, sometimes exponentially if this results in a "subterranean" RC. (Very bad from a handling point of view)
MacPherson strut equiped vehicles are reluctantly used for racing because one fundamental drawback of the setup is that it delivers a "migrating roll centre", generally down. That is, the lower the ride height or the more a wheel is compressed the lower the RC becomes, exacerbating roll which further lowers the RC.... (Note that roll compresses outside wheel suspension further lowering RC as it does).
TL;DR - Excessive lowering makes the car roll more and you end up driving on two wheels instead of 4.

Cambelt, service, ditching the sports cat for a decat, 3 port boost solenoid, 650cc injectors, harvey headers & up-pipe, harvey 20g and a little samco. bit worried about size of turbo but im hoping the avcs will sort it out or ill have to try and find an md321h or similar but that could take ages unless i break the bank and go new. yours is looking good mate, what headers did you get in the end? Were they working on mine already then?
