The Nordost approach is very simple in principal but very difficult in manufacture.

I am sure that everyone here will agree that the very best cable to connect a system together is NO cable, so with this in mind Nordost design and manufacture their cables to have the minimum possible effect on the signal.

As such, all Nordost cables are designed to have the lowest possible resistance and capacitance and the highest possible transmission speed.

You will also note that even on their most high end of cables, they use speaker terminations costing very little as these are incredibly low mass, have a very large contact surface area and affect the sound in a very limited way. Compare this with some other Hi-End cables that use incredibly large, heavy and complex terminations with will introduce their own effect.

On the Nordost Digital and Analogue cables, the terminations on some cables have to be physically larger to accommodate the cable design, but these are still very carefully selected to ensure that they are as light and "un-intrusive" as possible

The problem is Jason that all the properties for which you claim Nordost are superior are measurable ie resistance, capacitance etc. However when measured, which is easy, they are NO better than cable costing up to a tenth of the cost

Indeed they are measurable, which is why they stick their neck out and quote all the measurement characteristics of their cables. Show me another cable company that do the same!!!!

As far as cheaper cables having the same properties, that simply isnt true. There is no company manufacturing hi-fi cables anywhere in the world that come even close to the standards and tolerances that Nordost achieve and that is fact. As such, no-one offers the same performance characteristics.

I am more than happy for you to have your opinion though, and I will stick with what I know, we could go round in circles ad-infinitum.

Whats the rest of your system? It would be easier to know whether an Onkyo amp is suitable or not if we knew what else you have and what you want from the system ie films, music etc

The current range of Onkyo is very good, I have used them quite a lot recently on installations.

Two observations though, firstly the set up menus are not as logical as some others and as such, some parameters can be a little awkward to set, but this should not be an issue if you read the manual and wont affect day to day operation.

Secondly, they do tend to run hotter than others so providing you don't put anything on top of it, or totally enclose it in a cupboard, you will be fine.

It is seriously worth considering the equivalent Denon unit, personally I think their processing is better and their performance is very hard to beat at any price point.

If you have no intention of using them for music they are fine, for music they are rubbish. I used to have a 605 and have been using a 875 for a few years. The latter as a processor only, ie I'm using external amps. I'm waiting for the right processor to come along to upgrade to.
I also use a HD projector and the Onkyo has never thrown up any bugs or hdmi handshake issues.

Which Onkyo you should go for will depend on how big/difficult to drive your speakers are and therefore how powerful you need the internal amps to be.

As somebody else mentioned Denon are also worth considering but the Onkyo's are difficult to beat for the price.

Not keen on the entry level Onkyo's as they are a bit too entry level in terms of build quality. Had a wee play with the Denon 1910 a few days ago in work. Considering I am using one of Pioneers older high end AV Recievers, I was very very impressed which i wasn't expecting.

For all you "expensive cable is best" fans,

seems you all got a drubbing recently

What hifi conducted blind tests on HDMI cables last month.

Conclusively the blind reviewers couldn't tell any difference between the the

"" High end"" cable and the budget out of the box offering

Picture quality was impossible to tell apart lol

They concluded, there was a slight difference in the audio quality,

Slight!!

??

a) As is mine, and mines not an airport

b) So do i

c) Interesting, when i set mine up, i was advised .. that lower edge of the

panel should be between 900mm & 1100mm depending on seating

height, so your eyes are focused on the centre to lower third of the

panel. Its at 1040 btw..

just curious as to why it was so low

dont see why it warranted such a response

In my office I have an 'ebay' special - everything was at a huge discount on ebay except for the speaker stands - whole lot cost £600.

Marantz CD-73 KS
Audiolab 8000A
Dynavector speakers (£1,200 new - got for £200)
Silver cables
Atacama stands

Sounds absolutely brilliant with iPod and even better with CDs
If I had to sell up I would keep this and sell the Naim (the Naim is in a different league but I wouldn't be unhappy if I only had this).

Stu

Whats the dimensions of your room ? The reason i ask is a question to do with the Moinitor Audio RX8`s, do you find them a bit boomy ?

I had a similar choice to make with my own speakers in the past, it was a choice between the RS6 and the RS8, i went for the RS6 as the RS8`s came over a bit too boomy and obviously they needed more driving. Do you use them with the bungs in ?

Of course you always live with the idea of it happening at some point, lifes other luxuries just got in the way along the journey, no complaints happy with my system but I would be happier with a Cyrus and a little more time to listen to it, properly

Liking the PSX-R and the benefits to the rest of your system.
