Didn't someone predict the end of the world in 2012!!! Probably Nostrodamus is the likely candidate.

What a worry!

So then to recap....

There is no proof of God
There is no evidence that God ever existed
No one has ever spoken with God (apart from Moses)
God has never spoken to anyone or had a Podcast
He lives in an invisible place called heaven
If you're good boys and girls when you die you can go and float around up there with God
You will live forever, wearing mainly white robes
Everyone that ever existed lives up there (must be a gazbilliontrillion by now)
Pets aren't included - they just die
The Earth is 10,000 years old
God created it in 7 days

...... getting the picture?

He also causes Cancer, earthquakes and most catastrophes
He then also saves a few
You can pray to him (which is encouraged) but he will never answer
His followers use blind faith that he exists as there is a book called the Bible that says so
When he makes you suffer it's called a "test" - but there's no reward

All bible bashers have the traditional "What's in it for me" and "i'm alright so they deserved it" attitude when you scratch the surface of their real thoughts.
I don't like any religions. I don't go round knocking on their doors insisting i am right and i don't want them doing this either. I say bible bashers meaning any religions btw.

If you believe God is a male, he must have a ***** and *********, why?
This God of theirs breaks every law and commandment written.

Why this miserable attack on other people? If you dont believe then thats fine, why not leave it at that?
If others wish to believe in something surely thats their business? Some of you seem very angry about it, perhaps you need to sit down and talk about the true meaning of religion with a Priest or Rabii or whatever.

This thread seems to have been started just to wind up others and make personal attacks on others beliefs. It's not big and really not very clever.

Thats the sort of talk that gets threads locked r32.

At the end of the day, people who question it (me included) don't really do this in real life. i.e I don't go up to religious people in the workplace and question there motives, reasons and there speculative fantasy nature on life.

In real life, you either decide to hear something or not, else it may totally pass you by.

Translate that to the web and you always have a chance to reply/debate/comment on something you may or may not have ever had a chance to/want to/scared to comment on.

= educated/acknowledge/speculative debate?

I'm fine with anybody believing anything they want, as long as it doesn't encroach on freedom of speech or the way people live their lives in the civilised, rational world: Islam anybody? Infact it's not Islam I have the problem with, it's the government's belief that it deserves priority over common sense in the UK. No one wants Sharia law or these ridiculous oppressive regimes. I'm talking about the kind of people who believe killing women for bringing dishonor, etc, upon their family for not actually wanting to be forced into marriage or into covering their faces is acceptable.

The British government right now are asking us to basically be tolerant of intolerance and I'm f*cking sick of these twisted *****.

I buried my dad yesterday, no really, and therefore feel like I can contribute (hope I'm not a thread killer).

My dad died 12 days ago and I lowered him into his grave yesterday, and while he was not a practising catholic, he got baptised as a catholic at 19 just so that he could marry my mum (as my Grandma originally said 'No'), thats what love and religion mean to me, the same thjing. I'm not a practising catholic either but as I sat in church yesterday and the priest told me (and over a hundred other people) that someone or something loved us, I actually forgot the usual line of 'Oh yeah?' and started to think, 'I really do hope so'.

When it happens to you, you'll understand.

As a general rule, do you have a load of 'bible bashers' knocking on your door shoving religion down your throat?
I only ask out of curiosity as it's only Jehova's witnesses that I know of that do this. I've never personally had any other religious person knock on my door.

It leads onto what I was asked earlier in this thread about religion having a real impact on peoples lives regularly.Yes evil acts are committed in the name of religion, would they happen if religion wasn't involved? Probably, as most of those people want some form of control over others, or it's about territory. What I meant earlier, was that for most of us on a general, daily basis, we probably go without religion infringing on our lives. Most of us probably don't get hassled by those with faith, and hopefully those with a problem with it don't go hassling those who do have it.

With the exception of extremism, which needs to be dealt with, live and let live.

Cool

It ran it's course a few days ago, that's why it got 'muppetised'.

The OP did seem imflamatory, but there was some decent debate afterwards. Like as already been mentioned, I bet most people on this thread hardly ever mention religion outside of the internet, I know I don't.

But isn't that what the internets for? A discussion like this in reality would end in fistiscuffs Better that people can vent here than give people lopads of aggro in real life.

Why should a thread follow someone's perceived debating structure?

I've noticed that there are lots of comments over SNet that threads have been "muppetised" or have "ran their course" and then watched that particular thread take off again.

Interesting why some people try to pigeon hole a thread as having:

a) Potential for debate
b) Reasoned debate
c) Conclusion

This isn't Oxford College, it's SNet - so there's not reason to wrap threads in structure or dismiss them if a response doesn't follow the a-b-c guide (above). Just go with the flow and see what happens.

Sorry to hear that....

But (with respect), there's nothing wrong in hoping - that's a natural and common thing for those we love, and the thought of nothingness seems to cruel to contemplate so we cling to a false promise that allegiance to faith means that there is a chance that one day we'll be reunited with them in some utopia - and that is my issue; I have a problem with religion selling hope to the masses and each claiming unique ownership over the other of an almighty, all powerful being who (if we serve him - and them) will allow you access to those loved ones in some other place once you also pass on....

so i gather all you people who dont believe there is a god no matter what religion you do or dont follow, will make it clear to family that when you die you dont want a funeral in a churh/chapel or any other religous ground or any words said at you grave side or at the cemetery from any priest/vicar or a minister etc AS THAT WOULD BE TWO-FACED!!!!!!
this Also goes for baptism i gather your children if you have any will not be baptised/christened!!

because you have all made it clear about your thoughts.

Its a free world and people should be able to live there life how they wish. If you dont want to listen about faith thats your choice.

also it is a bad world out there and there is all types of evil people out there no matter if there religious or not....

I don't really care what happens to me after my death - I'll be long gone, into nothingness.... once any useful organs have been removed (for transplants etc.) for all I care throw my corpse in a biodegradable bag and toss it down a hole and plant a tree on top....

Baptism - that's an interesting concept..... membership to a religious organisation, typically performed as an infant and therefore removing individual choice - although ensuring salvation! (and of course a few new paying members ).

I take exception (i would wouldn't I) with your 'its a free world', no it isn't and people cannot go around doing what they like, that would be wrong. People need rules and a moral code/compass and a concience to guide them. If religion lays down the rules and they are good and right then fair enough, it does seem some choose to twist and interpret the meanings in a different way and that has always been the case - it is still worng and agianst the meanings on the religion, whatever the religion.

I am agnostic, i do live by a moral code pretty much based on Christianity and my parents rules and interpretation of right and wrong as i grew up in the UK.

I do not believe in God or the devil or heaven and hell. I do believe in right and wrong, good and bad.

Would you mind defining the meaning of a martyr!

I find your attitude very strange, no one has critcised you in any way for your beliefs or tried to change them in any way.

Why are you deliberately trying to bait those who think differently, what are you trying to prove? You cannot accuse those who follow their religion as it teaches of doing anything wrong or anti social. What is your reason for those not very amusing or clever statements? One might almost suspect you of looking for a bit of cheap popularity.

You would do better to wind your neck in and stop making an **** of yourself for no good reason! I hesitate to use the real word for it.

Yet another of your sensible and balanced posts. Yes we also get the Jehovah's Witnesses coming round. Its part of their religion to spread the word. I am not a JH by the way. They are a couple of pleasant blokes, they are not in the least pushy, and we usually spend a few minutes putting the world to rights. Neither of us mind having a chat with them in the least. Certainly not necessary to be rude and unpleasant, live and let live I say.

I have never been approached by anyone from a different religion or even an atheist trying to convert me! Can't see why anyone should be jumping up and down over other religions.

I have only had to put up with vicious criticism in places like this forum and I must assume that those who do that are acting as fundamentalist atheists who are acting in a similar way to to the imaginary people whom they are shouting about! I always wonder what their reason is for doing it.

Les
