Offshore and Tory goes hand in hand

Tories gave the same speech back in 76, they changed the tax and sold BT/BR/BA, closed coal mines and steel works, fooked the NHS up by shoving in so much middle (overpaid) management and removing the likes of the Matrons off the floor, screwed british industry over big time(shipworks etc) and now we dont have any real form of industry left
(did I forget to mention that it was the tories who basically cut the armed forces to the bone and did the same for customs and excise?)

What people dont understand (or seem to dont understand) is that one government is exactly the same as the next, they all increase taxes (anyone who said the tories didnt make anywhere near as many tax rises over labour need to look at what they actually taxed in the first place), and yes, high earners need to pay more tax, not less.

Short memories.....

My memories seem to be different to yours

1) Winter of discontent anyone? Rubbish piling in the streets, dead not being buried

2) Healey going to the IMF cap in hand because the country had been bankrupted

3) Archaic working and union practices inc flying pickets which meant they held the country to ransom

4) 80 % tax rates which meant some high earners really did flee the country and so then contributed nothing to the exchequer

5) The young men who were to go on to form New Labia all running around with CND badges wanting us to unilaterally drop our nuclear arsenal.

My memory ain't short mate

Been there and seen it yet 3 day working weeks, well thats better than having a SERIOUS north/south divide with some parts of the north having 50% unemployment , which is what the tories did, under them the rich got richer and the poor stayed poor....

Im not saying that Labour are perfect, but it wasnt exactly Wilson's problem either, alot of it was a Global issue with the Arabs refusing to supply the yanks with oil (as they had supplied Israel during the Kippur war), or as we know it, a global energy crisis (take it you remember all the cars queuing up for fuel? )
It didnt help that there were several industrial disputes going on at the same time, those on their own would have caused no real issues, but together with the fuel crisis it really hit britain hard (plus having a hung parliment didnt help).

It was several issues (one being very global, shame we flogged our oil or we would have probably been ok) that brought down Wilson's government, not just the fairly "minor" industrial actions that were going on.

The Old Labour party was largely made up of honourable men who entered politics for altruistic reasons. They instituted the NHS, the eleven+ exam which enabled those from poor backgrounds to go to good schools, and they governed the country for the sake of the people. Quite obviously this ethic has gone to the wall and few are prepared to trust the majority of our politicians any more.

The major problem with Old Labour was that they were at least as incapable as NL at running an economy.

Agree with you Les, now all the MP's are doing are fraudulent claims for expenses, voting themselves silly 10% pay rises every year, not listening enough to the people who put them in power..... sounds like the 18th/19th century governments
