lol thats the spirit.
OK seriously then.
9700 is a VERY capable phone in most aspects. Yup there are other better media phones out there, but for my medium use of music etc the Berry is fine for that.
Great for email, text, IM, photos etc. Average for video playback etc, decent screen res.
Light on data compared to some etc.

The DEXT, Android based, nice touchscreen interface, with full hardware qwerty. If I was only keeping one... it would be the Berry.

Good luck with the decision mate. Desire is a very well spec'ed phone. Just depends what suits you at the end of the day.

I have had quite a few HTC phones and reception and call quality is always excelent. On one site I was working at I had my iphone with me and I could only get a very poor signal in one window of the house I was working in and if someone rang I could not pick the phone up as it would drop the signal instantly. I then put the same sim in my HTC phone and it was a full signal anywhere in the house The iphone is a cracking gadget but a useles phone

I seem to remember someone else reporting such issues but it being suggested it was a network fault not the phone.

OK can any of you guys tell me about SMS delivery receipts on the 9700 and the Desire.

On all my old Nokias there was a setting to ensure evry SMS sent requested a delivery receipt. On Motorolas I know you had to set it individually on each SMS you wrote which would be a pain.

So on the 9700 and/or Desire can you set it so every SMS asks for a delivery receipt by default. I have searched on the web, but not found any answers to that level of detail.

9700 you can get every SMS to auto get a delivery report. the SMS when sent shows a 'tick' beside it and when delivered a small 'D'. simple but effective.

The Blackberry does display a tick to the side of the message once it has been replied to, but i don't know if it actually receives a report back to the phone saying its sent to make it a proper delivery report and not just a 'reply done' report... If that makes much sense? One of the Blackberry nerds should know this.

The HTC Desire will indeed to delivery reports but they are charged at 1p per report from orange for a standard sms delivery report. It is this that makes me wonder about the Blackberry reports. If it is the case then a Blackberry would be the cheaper option, unless of course other networks provide delivery reports for free....?

I apologize if my post has created more questions

*Edited to add.... I didn't notice about the small 'D' that appears once delivered, but even so i am not sure if orange would charge for this or not.

P.S. i only know orange network info as thats where i work when not at uni

I am on Orange and with my Nokia they never charged me, but 1p is a small price to pay to know my 'mission critical' SMSs have arrived.

Can anyone confirm the behaviour on Blackberry on Orange?

By the way no need to apologise, these are the sort of questions I should ahve asked about the iPhone rather than just assuming that the hype was equal to the execution.

I have to say I dont send many texts anymore, as I BBM everyone lol.
Will also depend on which OS you are using too.

Crackberry would have every answer in full I guess, but im not gonna take a stab in the dark, so am just changing my settings to turn delivery reports on, and will report back shortly lol

Right, when switched on the network/phone confirms delivery with a D under the tick which confirms it is sent. With them turned OFF, it simply displays the sent tick.
No seperate report or text confirmation.

Thats on a Blackberry 9700. Running OS 5.0

Well I am going to try and go and get my hands on each of them as soon as possible and make a decision. I truly am not worried about having a touch screen or being able to ***** wave and say I have the coolest looking device so it wil be down to which works the best for what I want.

If that is the Blackberry then so be it.

Thank you and everyone else on this thread for your help, it is genuinely appreciated.

No worries mate, its also refreshing to see someone make a sensible educated decision about getting a phone and not being pressured into getting the in thing.... as most of my friends have done by getting the Blackberry's I pressured them into

I would say you should use any phone for 72 hours minimum to get a real feel for it. Gimmicks tend to make a fast impression on you, but soon the normal day to day use gets tedious. I was like that with the HTC Touch Diamond.

Well the problem is I got sucked into the iPhone thing by my friends who told me it is wonderful. Turns out they don't use a phone the way I do. They probably marvel at how cool it looks and pose with it rather than actually use it for business. LOL

I will give you a small example of how a little thing can annoy me. I have a Nokia 6300 on PAYG and my iPhone on monthly. To set the alarm on the iPhone requires swipes and scrolls and adds and so on and so forth. Looks cool though. To set the alarm on the Nokia - Goto - Alarm - 06:45 - OK. Done. Takes half the time of the iPhone and while either are not long I find the iphone is like that for everything. It adds up and eventually has just worn me down along with the signal strength issues of course.

I know what you mean with long menus mate. I have the same annoyance with the Android too, but thats partly because I am brainwashed by the BB OS now, so I and allowing time to convert lol.

Quicklaunch is a handy homescreen app on the BB for launching into a specific page of an app with one key press, so things like setting an alarm, getting to a particular setting etc is simple if you use it a lot.

Im not one for pretty, either the device or the presentation. Practical is the key for me, and having a full qwerty on the BB is the winner for me. And the way it handles email too, suits me needs.
The full qwerty on the DEXT is nice too, but like changing between any 2 devices from different manufacturers, you get stuck in your ways.

I look forward to finding out what you end up with

OK had a good play with a 9700 and I like it. More of a phone for people who actually want to get on with their business than pose which suits me down to the ground. Does everything I want very well.

I haven't got my hands on a Desire yet (are there any actually out there?), but I am leaning towards the Blackberry as I think the Desire may be too like the iPhone and I don't need reminding of that particular nasty experience

I have had an iphone for near 2 years now...but its insured..and in total i have had near 8 so far, mainly because i keep loosing em..but never had issues with them unless of course it drops down the stairs.

Otherwise i think it is a great phone

Could the signal strength not just be an O2 issue in general? have you tried a different phone?
