OK history lesson time. In terms of popularity for streaming adult video it was Real Media then Windows Streaming Media and now Flash as the file sizes are lower hence delivery much quicker even for high quality HD video. The ability to quickly move to a position of your choice in the video file is a big advantage to Flash streaming video too. Believe you me that is impotant in the adult industry

For downloadable video Windows Media is still the king as it runs natively on so many computers, but Flash video is starting to make an impression here too.

Look I know you think I am just picking on you, but you are wrong about this.

If you don't believe me have a surf round the biggest **** sites ion the web and see what their trailers are using.

And no it does not run on the iPhone talking of Lemons.

I can accept that, your knowledge of the **** industry is obviously extensive.

Just the other day Adobe were crying again about Apple not supporting flash, they used a **** site as an example!! Funnily enough that **** site - Bang Bros - loads just fine on the iPhone and iPad streaming H264 video, same as many others including of course Youtube and Vimeo.

As has been said, **** will move with the money and right now the clever money is running from Flash. It was great in it's day but it's day is nearly over.

From a technical perspective more than you will ever realise LOL. If you want to know what is happening on the web tech wise follow the adult industry.

Just tried Bangbros on the iPhone - doesn't play the trailers for me, but if it uses H264 then it should work fine.

Trouble is I know of at least 3 huge sites who in the last 6 months have switched to Flash as their main video delivery mechanism, one of them at least has a mobile friendly version of the site and maybe that is how they will deal with it for now. On a PC Flash video is hard to better for load times, quality and usability etc. so that is why they are going that route.

I can't test it right now as the hotel is blocking pretty much everything! But it was a big and rather amusing story and plenty of others did try it.

I say the middle man - Flash - will be cut out and we'll see HTML 5 streaming either H264 or perhaps OGG video.

The only person that thinks Flash is dying is Steve Jobs/Apple. Flash is dying in the same sense that all technology eventually gets replaced, but Flash at the minute is increasing market share.

It is said by most that it is a very premature move for Apple not to include Flash and looking at what is available for it now, you would have to agree.

HTML5, I have been following this for years, but it no ware near ready, it is still in draft, it will not be ready for years and by years, I mean nearer to 10 than 6.

H.264, this will never be main stream, I will not even bother getting into the reasons why.

So, for now, get used to the blue lego tiles.

I don't doubt it, but fir me it does not work. It gives me the mobile version of the site and when you click to play a trailer it just gives a page load of code and Safari eventually says 'there is a problem viewing this webpage'

Well given the projected take up of smartphones and other mobile devices something is going to have to give eventually. Either Flash will be replaced with something else or Apple will give in. My money is on the latter.

Dedrater, I'd love to hear more, perhaps in Computer Related.

For now people can try this http://www.youtube.com/html5 although draft spec, it's working fine.

We were discussing this whole flash thing at work yesterday, as we were amused about the whole Adobe is going to sue Apple because they won't allow flash on their iDevices situation.

One of the major issues Apple has is that battery life, which we know isn't great on the iPhone, takes a massively severe hit when you use flash. Why? Because flash basically maxes out the CPU to 100%. It was said that it'll run down the battery in 20 mins or less.

Some of the team said they didn't believe flash would do that, so the team lead showed them what happens on OS X (and the iPhone OS is a cut down version of OS X), he fired up Safari, opened up the diablo 3 site which is flash heavy and within a few seconds the CPU was maxed out at 100%. The rationale was, if it's doing that on a desktop machine (top of the range 27" iMac) then it'll do it on iPhone / iPad (not sure if we can actually check memory usage via debugger on iDevice, will check today)

Just run the Diablo 3 site and some of gameplay videos etc. on an average Windows XP Pentium 4 via IE and 40% of the CPU is the max it used.

Also tried some back to back Flash video and some Windows Media video and the CPU/memory usage is no different on a PC between the two so not sure why Flash should be such a drain on a Mac.

Must be the way it is implemented on OS X.

Good old PCs eh?

I use Click to Flash, flash only loads if I click on it or whitelist the page. It's quite an eyeopener when you get to see exactly how much is being loaded by some pages.

Flash is pants on the Mac, I don't miss it at all.

If you know anyone who works for 02 get them to refer you as friends & family and you get 30% off the monthly tariff. My mrs does and has sorted me and at least another 5 friends out with said deal (think its capped at 20).

Cheers
Simon
