I'm almost touch typing on the touch screen Qwerty now, the HTC UI is so flipping marvellous it knows what I want to write before I do
I think Sunday is a goer whatever the weather, after all, we are Nobbers

As someone who hasn't owned an I-Phone or similar and as my current contract is coming to an end, is the I-Phone really worth the extra cost over the Desire?
Cheapest contract i found for the Desire makes the phone free and with redemption, monthly payments work out at just under £21 a month over 2 years.
The I-Phone 3G works out at £30 a month for 2 years.
Then the I-Phone 3GS is £35 a month for 2 years.
I know some folk will be used to layouts and OS's, but i'm not used to either....

to be fair, if you haven't owned either, go for the desire. it's cheaper and the differences to you will be negligible compared to not having owned a smart phone before.
there will be a new version of android that will allow apps to be stored on the expansion micro sd card, so that current restriction will be moot.
the iphone offers a massive application store - 4 times the android app base, all in one place. this is probably the single significance to your particular decision.

If you already have Mac stuff at home and/or use iTunes, then I would consider the iPhone. If however, you are fresh to Smartphones and don't use iTunes/Mac stuff I would seriously consider the HTC Desire.
I've just got the Desire and it is a fabulous piece of kit...you wouldn't be disappointed.

Who is supplying it? Direct or middleman?
If I order a phone I expect it within 48 hours unless advised out of stock at time of ordering.
Sally waited a while for hers too though. Seems they are VERY in demand. Imagine that lol

Its coming via a middle man, apparently their supplier was out of stock when I ordered (they did not tell me this) but now they are not even replying to my e-mails.... oh the joy. The funny thing is - they upgraded my account to unlimited web on the day I ordered.... but thats not much use if I dont have a device!!

Phones are carrier locked nowadays, especially PAYG, older iPhones can be carrier unlocked but unless your a technical genius you can't unlock the latest version. You could buy one now and wait or use your technical knowledge to write an unlock for yourself.

I already have one desire and will be picking up another from the shop tomorrow?

Its o2. I am with o2 business via an o2 business re-seller. My rep is "sorting it" for me....
I am not in any massive rush - but its just irritating that I put the order in 2 weeks ago and nothing has arrived - they still charge me for the web though...
Hm.

Well i managed to order a Desire last night.
It's an upgrade with Orange and the phone itself cost £150 with a 2 year contract at £15 a month, though i added the 500mb data for a free 1 month trail. At that, it's just as good a deal as anywhere...
Just need to twiddle my thumbs now, although i haven't had an email through about the order being processed. Customer services said it's defo went through mind you.

Online orders with Orange can take longer, so I have found. Interested to know how that works out for you.
I was going to get a Desire but am tempted to hold out for the BB slider whenever that decides to appear lol.

Good stuff mate. The reviews for the Desire get better and better, and sales are HUGE and climbing, so sounds like its worth the wait. Unlike the BB slider that I will wait endlessly for lol.
Definatly an android fan now though.

I would recommend the Iphone to someone like my sister who doesn't really like computers and wants things as simple as possible, she would want everything to work "out of the box" so to speak.
I would recommend the Desire/Android 2.1 to someone who likes computers and like to alter and play with something to get it working how they want.
Don't forget Android now has an excellent free sat nav built in and it works great!

But the deals for sim only contracts are much better as you don't have to pay for the price of the phone. The store i work in has lots of people doing that. But 350-550 for the iphone is a lot of money upfront just for a phone IMHO.

Well surprise, surprise, Orange have no record of my order and phone is now out of stock.
"We will email you as soon as it becomes available. OK sir?"
OK...what email address do you have for me?"
"Er, we don't seem to have one here...."
Need i say any more?

Spoke to a chap at an online mobile company who suggested waiting till my contract officially finished at end of June.
With both the I-Phone 4G and Nokia N8 coming out, he reckons these two will destroy the Desire(if i fancy one of them), or i can get a MUCH better deal for the Desire then.
ATM then, i'm going to wait and see how things pan out.
