Dude dont bother with insurance, not worth the paper is written on. I paid £3k for my French Bulldog and she is not insured. Every week i put £20 into a savings A/C for her, and that will take good care of her. I do the same for my staffie as well.

Everyone I know recommends http://www.vetsmedicover.co.uk - good service, cheap policies and no problems.

What happens if the bill is more than you've paid in to that account?

Fair enough. Take a look at the link I posted as they do cover dogs over £1000. All of the folks I know with Newfoundlands paid over £1500 for their dogs and are insured.

Shaun, don't bother with insurance. Just save the money yourself. It a lot better IMO. Insurance is a nightmare, you need to pay upfront and then claim it back, thats if they pay out. You have excesses to pay, they don't cover this, they don't cover that. IMO

I think you'll find that 1500 is also a greater amount than 1000. Maybe you should spend the money you've saved on a tutor to teach you basic maths.

I'm tempted to "self insure", but I guess we all insure against "the biggie".......RTA etc where the vet bill might run into several thousand £'s
Just as you have put the first £20 in the bank

I use Tesco for my american bulldog so not the cheapest to insure but it's just under £20 a month and have paid out £5000 in the last 15mths with no hassle/problems at all so would recommend hth

also when I renewed my policy after the first £2500 worth of claims it only went up by 70-80 pence a month this is the first pet I have ever insured and would not be without it now and most good vets will do a direct claim so only have to pay your excess mine is £60

I was also advised to insure mine with Argos it's an American bull dog cross, I think I paid 180 for the year and it covers me up to 4k. it was recommended by my vet.

We didnt insure our last Boxer. He had cancer on his leg, and towards the end of his life a ulcer which wouldnt heal on his eye. The vets bills were staggering!
When we got Ella as a pup, we insured her straight away with Direct Line. Thank god we did! She is now 2.5 and has had some skin problems, and the vets put her on tablets which were £5 a tab!! with numerous vet visits etc, it soon adds up!! But after I have done hours of research and trialling different things, we have finally managed to get her off the tablets
We have her insured on a 'life long cover policy. It has gone up this year, but as you will find when you try to go elsewhere to save money, they wont cover existing conditions, so you find you are virtually stuck with your current provider; however saying that, although they increased it, it wasnt a dramatic one IIRC!!
