Those who have bought quality!!

A sofa which will be as good in 50 years as it was when new is the one you want to buy!!

Whether you keep it that long is up to you - but the years you have it will be enjoyable years ...... it's the same as quality shoes and a quality bed - do not skimp on it!

Don't skimp on quality - absolutely agreed. Pay to get the best and appreciate the difference, completely...

BUT

Don't try and tell me that ANYONE on here is going to own a sofa for 50 years - or even half that - it just doesn't happen. We live in a society where fashion is often the more pressing aspect - hence why build or sell sofas (or shoes or beds or anything else) to last 50 years (at 3 x the price) when no-one will ever need or use one for that long?

You're actually looking at it the wrong way round Pete... The sofa that is built properly, from solid materials and using strong joints - that gives a very sturdy and sound frame (that won't flex all over the shop when I sit on it!) - combined with good natural fibre and synthetic coverings that won't compress (and will feel comfortable for more than a couple of years), topped off with thick fabric that won't show significant signs of wear and tear / use (and will probably still look like new, or clean up like new, after 5 years of good use) is probably what I'd look for. A side effect of that MAY be that it'd last 50 years (or 20 or 30), but that's not a valid selection criteria. A sofa entirely hewn from solid concrete would last 50 years but I'd not want to sit on it for very long.

Buy quality for the right reasons based on the type of product being purchased, not for the wrong ones (like it'll last for ages, or it's got the right name). You may get the longevity and/or 'cool' brand name when you buy a quality product, but it's not usually why you would buy.

Anyway - that MAY be what you actually mean.....

50 years is nothing to own a Sofa - or any piece of furniture ..... if it is supremely comfortable then why not?

Of course, I come from a different generation - one which gets it right first time, so doesn't need change to feel valued.

grr I hate DFS, i'm sitting on a DFS sofa at the moment which is coming up to around 3years old. Its crap, infact i get moaned at constantly by the missus because apparently I am ruining it by sitting on it? Paid extra for the scotch guard protection, which after having to get a fella out to clean a stain off it informed it, it didn't have any stain protection on it!

We didn't take their finance deal and glad i didn't as at least when it does give way, we still won't be paying for it.

Furniture Village here, brought a couple of sofas at the same time for the front room and conservatory, I paid cash so I don't know what finance they offer, but the service was pretty smooth from start to finish.

The lounge sofa collapsed at one end (my 24 stone frame), a local guy came out the next day reinforced it at both ends with scaffolding... no just a few extra decent sized nuts, bolts and washers.

You could see the sofa was made of cheap balsa wood in places, but the speed of service was very good and it's covered for 5 years and after that I'll bin it.

I wouldn't buy DFS due to the annoying adverts, never ending sales and the mickey mouse finance deals.

UPDATE: Ordered my Sofa from DFS

Ended up ordering the sofa from DFS Enfied...

Guy taking the order, had a runny nose and he sounded like a horse! So kept my distance and went through the process...I was told they recently changed their finance company to Santander, who recently declined me a mortgage (I told the guy this) as I was thinking they WILL also decline the £1500 sofa!

Funnily enough I have had two sofa’s from DFS on finance in the last 6 years with no issues...! And I got my mortgage approved recently from RBS (who dfs used to use for finance)

I get a call from DFS your credit has been declined! What that meant was a note on my credit file! And then the guy has the nerve to say I have tried the second company we use and they have excepted and I need to return to the store to sing the forums again!

Peed me right off –
  • he did not make me aware they used a second company (as I did tell him I had issues with Santander)
  • Then he did a second search without asking me – if I had been declined again that would have totally fcuked my credit file!

I spoke to a lady on the phone, she said the sales guy should have made you aware they use one of two companies for finance!!!

AHhhhh...A$$Oles

I agree , weve just bought 2 stressless Mayfair recliners and they are just so good. Pricey though but you get what you pay for.

SamUK

You need to get on to Experian to find out why you're being declined.

Santander are only declining you based on the data received from the Credit Reference Agency.

Sign up for a free trial with Credit Expert and take a look at your file / score.

I went for a new credit card the other week so I could do a balance transfer 0% job. I got declined WTF. So I did an Experian report...came back 999 maximum score you can get. Looking at some threads on another forum, people who claim to work in banks, are saying they are being very choosy currently and have strict lending profiles. One guy couldn't even get a mobile phone contract.
