I think a pickup has to have a minimum payload to be classed as a commercial vehicle, 1 ton i think.

I've just put me vehicle reg on the DVLA website and the tax has gone up to £200 a year! van tax doesn't seem so great now

Was £120 when I first tax'ed it last year and I thought I'd put my reg number on the online tax site and it said £200 for 12 month or £110 for 6 months.

Would be interested to know what put you off the Navara as I am just about to buy a new one (or a new pathfinder) and there is nothing really reported to go wrong with them? or are you looking at the old D22 model from about 2002?

Just reports I've seen on the net when reading up on them, appears there are still numerous faults with them, not neccessarily engine failures in general but more unreliability than anything else, been reading up on the Toyota Hi-Lux these seem to be the best of the bunch for reliability

I really recommend to you the Ford Ranger. Ive had a couple now and had my present older shape (2004) for 1.5 yrs now. Its a great pickup (mines a proper full size pickup, not a waste of space double cab). Its been totally reliable and i was told by someone whos work have had all of the different makes of pickups that the Ranger was the most reliable and the best tow vehicle out of the lot.

The newer Ford Ranger (2006) onwards has the tdci engine which is smoother and more economical although my older engine does the job and can be remapped for more power anyway.

The Ford Ranger is often overlooked as people not really in the know, seem to go for a bling l200 or navara and probably dont even know what a Ranger is!

Its a tough, no-nonsense pickup that gets the job done.

If they did a ford ranger a little bit bigger with better specification and a bigger diesel engine it, then it would probably be nice, the current model looks a little girly to me.

Nice but no use!

The Navara is the absolute maximum size for UK roads and parking, the new 2010 model is about 4" longer than the old model so its going to be tight in most parking spaces. I recently parked my wifes Matiz in a car park in Manchester City Centre (very close to the big wheel on a falling down bumpy car park, NCP?) and i could hardly get the Matiz in to the space they were so small!

The yank tanks look great but I very much doubt the quality.....

I have had a Toyota Hilux Invincible since New (Sep 07) Just had the 50K service and only problem I have had was that the Aircon stopped working (Hole in a pipe somewhere) but sorted under warranty without problem

I really can not speak highly enough of them. Has towed loads of things (even dumper trucks) and really had no issue.

I average around 29 MPG and will sit happily on the motorway at 70-80 all day

It is also very comfortable and is used at least once a week for trips to Berkshire and back (380 mile round trip).

I seem to remember £175 a year for tax but could be wrong as it was a while ago and my memory isn't so good on things like that.

Interior, Have seen a few on pistonheads but th interiors dont really look up too much, is there any particular model uprated interiors came standard in or is it all added options?

My Invincible came with leather and sat nav as std. The only options we could choose was the lining and cover for the back and the towbar kit.

I think they may have stopped that since I bought mine. Other than that the interior is very good, and very well put together.

I was recently sat in a new basic Hilux and althought it was a base model, still very good.

My mate has just started rebuilding a D plate Hilux pickup, he said something about making it into a "Marty McFly Machine"

He has some kind of V8 engine at work for it, and has fitted some KC spotlight thingys on the roof, i think it will be cool as hell once its finished, looks a bit rough at the moment, but this is just his runabout while his concourse Cosworth sits in the garage doing nothing.



I prefer the old one looks wise, but i bet it drives like a bag of hammers

Drives Ok for an old girl, totally original, only had 3 engines, 2 gear boxes and probably 2/3 body rebuilds after meetings with Trees (as was just before this pic was taken)

Bigger diesel engine???? Theres a 2.5, the same as all the other makes plus Ford do a 3.0 as well. If you want bigger than that, then your have to get a US truck!

On the wildtrack models, the specs the same as the higher models in the other makes. AS for looks, well , thats indivisual but personally prefer the Ranger as there not everywhere like the Navara and L200. The single cabs in any pickup always look way better than douuble cabs imo plus theyve heaps more load space. Ive never really understood the popularity of double cabs really, as they're just a glorified estate/4x4 really.
Its got to be a proper full size pickup for me.

Not just size but power, the ford ranger is about 139 bhp? which is pretty gutless. The new Navara is 190bhp and about 225 for the new 3.0 litre.

anyways as your looking for a towcar think about tow weights, hilux can only tow 2200kg's any engine, navara and l200 2700, rodeo 3000, ranger 3000
ive had or tried most of these, rodeo was horrible to drive round any sort of corner, ours had 4 shocks and a rear leaf spring within a year from new, also got bad backache from the seats
rangers always seem very outdated and agricultural even for pickups and people who have them say theyre pretty thirsty
navara's i like and my mate swears by his but i know some people have had real horror stories with them
at the moment weve got an 03 l200 with 160,000 miles on the clock thats still going strong and a new l200 that replaced the isuzu and i do enjoy but not quite as much as the old shape.
old shape l200's tend to have engine problems on 2003-04 models where they made some changes that didnt work so well. think main thing to watch for is head gasket failure
old l200's will be about 18mpg towing, new ones 24 towing up to 33 with regular driving, navara's max of 30 taking it easy,22-24 towing
all trucks were 185 tax appears its gone up in the budget...
mot is as a cars, servicing is 12k for new l200, 4500 for old l200, 18k for navara i think

I've had a manual Navara for a year. It's an Irish import which I bought new for a very decent price! I bought it to tow a newage Scoob and trailer and it does the job admirably.

It never sees the city centre, I use the wife's Mini for that.

Can't recommend them enough.

I own a 07 L200 animal double cab and a 2010 barbarian L200. The new one is much more refined and has better equipment. There is nothing wrong with the older L200 with 31mpg all the time. Towing average 24mpg. Just fancied a new pickup
