You do realise that you adding those keywords into your post has now alerted MI5, NSA and a few other interested parties. When you get home, check to see if there is a crackle on your home phone

If you google Bench rest comps or long range target shooting, you will get there, its just the civi version.

There are a couple of makers that will sell you the same model as sold to the forces. How good you get depends on ho much practice you put in.

When I was in the cadets and shooting regularly, I was putting in sub 6" groups at 1200 yards with next to no effort.

Thank you Simon, will any gun club do sniper shooting or only specific ones? I think i'd enjoy the mathmatics of working the shot out just as much as actually shooting it

You will have to go to a specific club to get the training you want. Best thing to do is ask around and see what you like.

If you like the mathematics, then perhaps surprisingly, air rifles are a good bet. They have relatively little power, and therefore the shot is easily affected by range. This means that you have to compensate more for the distance of your target than more powerful weaponry.

Now I know an air rifle is not as cool as a sniper rifle, but the one I just sold was bolt action, had a silencer, telescopic sights and a 10 shot magazine. Couple that with the fact that 500 shots cost about £10, and club membership was £2 a day and you have quite a cheap sport. No gun cabinet required, no license needed.

I've got a book I am about to sell, called Total Airguns. Goes through all the theory of this kind of stuff, and there are programs you can download that will allow you to plot the trajectory of the pellets you fire. The amount of detail you can go into is amazing.

It might be a reasonable starting point for you, as you are more likely to find a club near to you. There are not that many places that are licensed for full bore rifles, little old grannies don't like it when stray shots land in their gardens

sniper rifle is just a normal rifle with a telescope, made to much lower tollerances and uses higher powered amunition.

You'll need to learn to shoot well first, then you can go over to long range stuff.

The long range stiff is fun but very very difficult.
