Aren't the new government committed to a fuel duty stabiliser - ie. fuel duty will decrease when oil prices are high and increase when they are low(er), aiming to smooth out some of the spikes?
The was a good interview with Cameron in the motoring section of the Daily Torygraph (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/...-motorist.html) which suggests he might not bleed motorists quite as dry as the last few governments have, but I'll believe it when I see it.

This Government may only have 6 months - or may have 5 years. If it lasts 5 years then I can assure you, by the end of 5 years, the £435 Tax will be £500 and above.

This is what governments do. They want to tax you. They pick a subject for taxation. It doesn't matter what it is, road tax, fuel, whatever. They leak that they are going to do it, and they inflate the amount of the pain. On budget day, the actual figure is less than we feared, and we all breathe a sigh of relief. They get the tax they wanted, with no riots on the streets.
