Can't afford a house, yet an expensive to run Subaru with additional 18 inch wheels can be seen on your profile.

Like you say WTF

If life was that straight forward.

Privae renting could be way more expensive, so possibly not an option, and from some of the experiences of friends, can be even more hassle if any 'work' needs to be done.

As for council housing, area to area will vary, but it often entails going on lists and taking what you are given, he could end up somewhere worse. I think up my way, you can bid on houses, but I think you only have so many chances before you get pushed off the list if you don't take something. I'm not entirely sure.

The fact is, while I am strongly against claiming, the council should have dealt with this. You pay your rent, and problems are supposed to be fixed.

For me personally (or rather my parents), we rented, but always maintained our home ourselves. We fitted our own kitchen, did our own repairs, decorating etc. While other freeloaders got it all for nothing. However if we had encountered a problem we couldn't have fixed, it should've been done, as per the OPs case. Just because you live in council housing, doesn't mean you are a scrounger.

Part of what you pay for, is for issues to be fixed.

It must be nice to sit looking down on people less well off.

Lots of people better off than me. I can only afford one family ski holiday a year.

This is my thought process....You could have paid a plumber the same amount of money you spent on those wheels to fix the root cause of the damp.

...and then tried to claim that back off the housing people later. They might not have paid, but you'd have a dry house. Pretty sure you'd have got your money back though, and your son may not have had health problems.

Where family health is concerned getting somethign fixed ASAP is my priority rather than getting someone else to pay for it. Hence I have private medical insurance.

Must be nice to be able to 'only' afford one holiday a year. I haven't had one for 9 years, can't speak for the op.

Just because he isn't rolling in money, does that somehow mean he can't buy anything that isn't a necessity? I mean he could've forfitted a holiday for his wheels. Also, did he know about the issue of damp before or after getting them.. it could be relevant. Not to mention, until very recently the(probable) cause was unknown, what should he have done, pay various people to come and try and work out the cause, then try and claim it back? I mean damp alone could be due to various reasons. Other issues aside, you seem to miss the point that the problem was reported and should have at least been looked into.

It's all very easy to judge others when not in any similar position, and if this was some benefit scrounger who thought the world owed him a living, I wouldn't waste my time sort of defending this situation.

The one thing I will stand firm on is the issue of compensation, I don't think it should be the focus (and hopefully it isn't now), but he should've been helped out here.

I'd just like to highlight that every company I have ever dealt with regarding damp and the causes of, have offered a free survey....

This thread has astounded me. Never have I seen such smug, snobby comments in all my life.
Christ, the bloke has serious problems with his rented property. Rented, so flaming what. I grew up in a rented Council house. I now live in a 5 bedroom house, out in the sticks, that is costing me an arm and a leg to keep up. We work to pay bills.
Some of the comments on here beggar belief. The instant assumption he is on benefits. No, he is not. Drives a scooby and saves for his improvements, yes he is. Who is anyone on here to tell him how to spend what he manages to save.
His house needs looking at, end of. Whoever he is renting off has a responsibility to keep the house maintained. Not his problem. It's theirs.
Some of your comments on here have not only shocked me, they have also disgusted me.
Never thought I would see such outright snobbery on this board!!!!

No, I can only afford one ski holiday. I still go away for 2 weeks in the summer like everyone else.

LOL at silver spoon.

Trying to keep on topic, I understand he should recieve a service. But on this occasion the service failed. If it were me I'd be looking at finding the source of the problem rather than trying to get compensation etc. As I said before, I've recently had a leak and chose to takle it myself before calling my a plumber - once found I felt pretty good....although I still have 2 walls to repair and paint.

But I've said that before, so I'm not really adding anythign now.

.....and what's silver spooned about being bought up in a small house by decent, hard working parents, and going to normal schools? At one point my mum was in training and my dad on a 3 day week. I was entitled to free school meals.....but my parents didn't want that for me and my brother.

Even during these hard times, my mum would spend her grant on a skiing holiday, LOL, genius.

My parents taught me about work ethic, and doing things for yourself. I left school at 16, and worked in a clothes shop (remember Dunn and Co) with 2 GCSE C grades to my name.
