I would write to the landlord, enclose pictures of the problems and ask them to repair and cure the problem. Send recorded del as well.
Not sure about compensation, me i would just want to get it fixed!
Re home ownership - it is easy to say 'buy a house' when you have a house/mortgage already, it is still tough to get mortgages and you need to be absolutely squeaky clean credit wise.
I wonder just how many of us are...

This thread has astounded me. Never have I seen such smug, snobby comments in all my life.
Christ, the bloke has serious problems with his rented property. Rented, so flaming what. I grew up in a rented Council house. I now live in a 5 bedroom house, out in the sticks, that is costing me an arm and a leg to keep up. We work to pay bills.
Some of the comments on here beggar belief. The instant assumption he is on benefits. No, he is not. Drives a scooby and saves for his improvements, yes he is. Who is anyone on here to tell him how to spend what he manages to save.
His house needs looking at, end of. Whoever he is renting off has a responsibility to keep the house maintained. Not his problem. It's theirs.
Some of your comments on here have not only shocked me, they have also disgusted me.
Never thought I would see such outright snobbery on this board!!!!

We all have a laugh and a joke on here at time and sometimes people post silly things to get a rise, but some of the comments on here are just spiteful.
Let's just hope that nothing bad ever happens to the likes of davyboy eh?

This thread serves to show how easy it is to wind up an induvidual with a problem via antagonising comments.
To the o.p., I hope you get it sorted, genuinely. My opinion is you shouldn't have to pay for the repairs but you should have been more insistant before your son developed asthma. I have asthma myself which came on from a bout of pneumonia 7-8 years ago so know exactly how damp, dust, the cold, and dry conditions can trigger it. BUT you should have been more insistant.
...and sorry but asking for compensation on a mainly Tory viewed forum (especially after admitting you live in a rented house)... this thread was only ever going to go one way - how do I know? It's happened to me several times before on work related threads.
My advice, bow out and get on the phone to have the council or relevant housing association sort the issues.
Best of luck and I hope your son's asthma isn't permanent.

All you can do is to try it, the CAB might be able to help you there.
Is there medical evidence to show that damp like that can cause asthma. I have no knowledge in that respect.

My only issue was with the instant cry of "Compensation??" There are a lot of people on this forum who could have given advice on Asthma and Damp Removal, running head first into any forum screaming for compensation is never going to curry favour.

I'm sorry that your son has asthma.... and I hope he makes a quick and full recovery soon.
I'm also sorry that too many people these days seem to play the victim. It is time we all started sorting out our ****. Taking the side off a bath and putting a bowl or large towel under the offending leak is easier and quicker than changing a set of wheels.
And while you are at it bleeding radiators is easy as well. You just need a coffee cup and a key! Rocket science it aint.
Just saying. My 2 cents worth.

If thats supposed to make me feel sorry for you then you're sadly mistaken. Recovering from a disease that affects one in 3 is an achievement alright but doesn't warrant or excuse you from acting like a smug tw@ in my book.

Sorry mate but I would have picked up my tools before I picked up the phone, rented, owned, mortgaged or whatever the damp is your problem if its in your house, we had a leak from our bathroom, I traced it and tightened the coupling, it isnt rocket science you know, its water going through pipes, the minute I would have noticed the mould I would have got it sorted as damp is horrible and ruins houses.
Mine dried out, it took a while, when it did, I bought some paint and made good the damage the water had done.
I see no problem with anyone renting houses or living in council houses as not everyone can afford to buy, I do not look down on anyone who does, thats where I can from and I dont forget that but what I do look down on is the "its someone elses problem", no its not, it's yours.
Asthma can be really nasty and it can be caused by a multitude of things, mould is defnitely a factor but you have been watching it grow, you were aware of the damp and are now looking for a few quid ? your son will still have Asthma, you getting a couple of grand for a new Plasma or some coilovers for your Scoob wont help, but I suspect it will cost the housing association a few quid, it all comes off the bottom line of a charity but if you are happy to do that than fair enough, good luck, enjoy.

I was never after anyones sympathy.....just replying with a few facts.
The 1 in 3 thing is slightly scewed of course. As a country, the longer we live the more likely we are to get it. It doesn't effect 1 in 3 under 30s for example.
But, it is an acheivement that 18 years on I am still here....still fighting and arguing on the internet with my original username.

your housing association will have a legal section, so you need to write to them in the first instance. repairs, times, dates etc of when you called, what happened etc.
as for asthma........ well speaking from a medical background.... asthma is more likley to be caused by someone smoking, or passive smoke, by the keeping of animals, cleanliness of the property, diet exercise/or not, allergies etc.
if you sleep in a room full of mould spores, feasibily yr health could be effected. a leak in a bathroom which at best you might only spend a few minutes in would be impossible to prove.
think on though, you pursue yr landlord for compensation, all that happens is yr rent goes up (as all tnts do) to pay for paying out the slip and trip brigade.
I can tell you now, yr rent is very cheap because as a country we're in negative inflation. it'll change and social hsg tnts are going to find it shooting up- quite rightly to more market rates.
if you do get some compensation, I'd put it away to pay yr rent.

Good website here for advice on rented accomodation www.landlordzone.com I'm a member as a landlord and while I would have come over and had a look at the issue I'm also not a plumber.
I think both sides have some points. Fair do it is the landlord's job to maintain the property, but you've already said that you don't see why you should spend your money doing up someone elses house (before admitting you do want to buy it).
The fact remains that you have a big property and are paying a lot less for it than many others would be. Its a proper gift horse and while the Housing Association would need to do the repairs there is nothing stopping you at least being a bit house proud and having a look.
Example, if you phoned up and said "there's damp in the bathroom" the general thought would be "open the window when you have a shower then". However, if you'd spent the two minutes it took to take the side of the bath off in the first place and called to say "i've got a leaking pipe, get it fixed" then you would be unlikely to be in the situation you are now.
The compensation aspect didn't help but somethimes you do have to make some effort to help yourself. I think that's the politer way of putting some of the other comments which have been posted.

1. The last time I checked, a council house is in itself 'a benefit'. lol, FAIL
2. "I have a terrible leak, and a horrific fungal growth but I'll leave it be". Genius.
3. Green scoobs with gold wheels are sooooo 1997.
4. *edited to add* Sorry to hear about the Astham thing though, not good, so sympathy where it is due. Compensation won't make any difference though my friend.

Firstly I don't think the OP is some scumbag for living in affordable/council housing (or whatever it is) he and his wife both work after all. However, his first posts were all about whether he could get compensation or not. He asked the same question again and again.
He also stated that if he could then he would be 'retarded' not to try and get some money out of the council. Why not ask what he could do to improve his son's asthma? (I gather there are a few nice Docs on this forum)
I'm sorry but that sort of attitude winds me up

one might not agree with the OP but at least have the courtesy to read (and comprehend) what he has to say – or maybe that is too much to ask, this is snet after all
it took two fvcking pages for all the idiots on snet to work out the OP was not on sitting on his backside claiming benefits

I wouldn't disagree Dong -- but how many times does the OP have to say the fungal growth was not simply left there

Secondly - don't let the truth get in the way of a good argument.

all i can say is this has turned into a ridiculous thread!for all those posting,id like to say....they are trying to sort it,they are now investigating how much damage it has done due to them not investigating it sooner.just to add,i was unaware there was a leak,as it was always fairly damp area.no need really to go any further on here as mentioned above nobody seems to read the f*****g thread properly anyway!if they dont sort it 100% then the environmental health are totally behind us.to the minority of the posts, thanks for your help,i wont be trying to claim anyways as they are doing their bit to sort this mess out.i wish people could read properly on here!
