My bloody Saab is claiming 18 mpg at the moment, 20 to 30 would be great.

Your Saab would have more drama than the M3. I'm on my 3rd Saab Aero Hot as a stop gap, and its more fun to drive than the M3. Albiet the Saab has some choice abbot racing mods. The M3 is a great car but a bit like scoobs there are plenty of other marques out there these days that can deliver the goods.

My Saab has the BSR Stage one remap and its quite quick I suppose, I had a go with a newish M Coupe the other day, and we ended up going quite quickly but it didn't pull away more than a car length, either the driver wasnt trying but based on reaching those speeds on a quiet, fast road over a couple of roundabouts worth of roll ons it didnt pull any distance on me.

Dont get me wrong, I am under no illusions, I am no Saab Fanboy, I would swap it in a heartbeat for an MCoupe and I want to change it for something else but I dont have the spare cash or wifely approval, i.e. I am not bigging it up, I was hoping an MCoupe would spank it with ease but it didnt, why not, same with the M3 Convertible that had a pop, why cant they dust a crappy old Saab, I want one next but only if I can drop a Saab with less hp with ease !

Agreed - It goes back to the bangomotoring thing again. Saab to me = little money and virtually throw away money if it goes bang in a big way. But in the same token all the time its going, it rivals BMW for build quality, its quiet, comfortable and understated and yet keeps up or even overtakes most things on the road. If Spending circa 15K+ on a car I would want awfull lot more smiles to justify the overall expense. Must be my age or the current econmic climate, but I'm getting far to prudent these days.

Going back to the OP. I think you have to factor in the feel good factor as well as whether the M3 is a better car. I'm no badge snob (I drive a Saab ffs ), but I do have to admit I felt good when driving the M3, which is somethin the Scoob didn't deliver to me.

Mine wasnt bought as being throw away as I paid Nine grand for it, its still not quite in that bracket but I know what you mean, nearly bought a 330i but it didnt have three proper rear belts. Mine doesnt rival BMW on interior quality by a long way, but the rest of it seems very solid and well built, I think build quality is sometimes perception based on the tactile bits you touch, old Peugeots felt very rickety but were actually quite well built in terms of the shell, its just everything inside felt like it was made from Biscuits.

I would totaly agree with that -- I took an old peugot 205 GTI off roading many times (to get to secluded beaches etc) during my windsurfing heyday

and boy was it a tough son of a b1tch

Mine is 2002 aero hot 5 door, last of the 'proper' saabs before they went all vauxhall, and do find the build quality superb both in trim and overall build. 133K miles and feels as fresh both inside/out and to drive as the day it came out the showroom. Throw away is a slight exageration but it owes me very little compared to most other cars I have owned but feels just as good as cars allot more expensive, and not far off a E46 M3.
