Who Mapped Your Car?
#91
If you ever have a problem with or are not happy about any remap for whatever the reason you should give your tuner the opportunity to either have another look at the mapping/car or get him to return your car to the way it was offering you a full refund minus any time he spent fixing problems prior to remap so long as it is within their guarantee period.
Any tuner worth their salt gives a reasonable guarantee period of a week or more. If you aren't happy within that time, and you should know fairly soon after remap whether or not you are happy with the work done, don't delay and go straight back.
Complaning about a remap weeks, months or even longer afterwards is unfair to the mapper as you've clearly felt happy enough with the car to drive it for x amount of time without issue. If you're within guarantee take it back pronto.
It could be your car has developed a fault that's nothing to do with the remap, but it's always easiest and most convenient to blame the tuner for a crap remap rather than get to the bottom of a fault that subsequently another tuner finds and fixes, but tells you it's crap mapping and charges you for another remap that didn't need to be done in the first place. It happens.

No det cans of any sort were used nor were any mixture measuring equipment etc. Basically just a laptop with a pre made map and a few minor adjustments made while i was driving it about and charged £500 for the privilage. As i learned more i relised that more monitoring equipment should have been used to get the most from it. Took it somewhere else and the difference was night and day.

Dave Stone of DSAutomotives in Aylesbury Bucks mapped mine and a few others i know and the Unichip Q+ is a great bit of kit and the car now runs like a dream. 314 bhp on a my94 wrx cant be bad. He also does motec and ecutec so an all rounder. 2nd to him Dave Rowe is in a league of his own.

When I bought my 05 STi it had already been mildly modded and remapped by Enginetuner to 340/340 and was an awesome step up from my previous Bug WRX.
Since then it has been mapped by Paul@Zen after fitting an 18g turbo, and subsequently by RaceDynamix following a further upgrade. Both of these produced great results.
It's impossible to compare the results acheived by each mapper as they were all working from different base levels with different components.
But it's fair to say they all acheived good results that gave me no problems and I would recommend any of them.
Plus I get a lot more smiles per gallon

Mark at THWAITES DEVELOPMENTS, looks after my P1 and the members of WMI (West Midlands Imprezas). Mapped my 20G and got it spooling a lot sooner than previous mappers i have used and still making good power at 8k. Has an absoloute **** approach to mapping and wont do anything to compromise your car and absoloutley NO BULL****.Everything from an oil change to full track car builds. The guy is fast becoming a Legend in the West Mids area.

Tracktive Solutions. Based on the results my car has achieved over the past 12 months, whether that be the dyno or more importantly on the black stuff, I think I made a good choice.

I've had both my previous MY01 WRX and my current MY02 STi mapped.
My MY01 WRX was mapped by Chris Todd and then Pat .
My current car was mapped by EcuTek themselves way back in 2002 according to Powerstation when I went there for a remap. I wasn't happy with the map by Powerstion if I am honest in terms of how it felt on the road after the map and I found it hard to get information out of the mapper when I asked questions about if I was to change anything etc.
Got in contact with Simon (JollyGreenMonster) with the same set up and the car made something silly like an extra 22bhp and a extra 36lbft. Not big numbers but on the same set up and importanly how it felt to drive.
My car was running 290bhp - 260lbft when I took it to JGM. After 8 maps later with him I ran with a TMIC on EcuTek 411bhp - 375lbft before the clutch started to slip like a sausage at a brothel. Since then I have changed to a FMIC and Simtek ECU mapped by JGM running now 453bhp - 386lbft.
So Simon gets my vote everytime as it's mapped safe, car is used for everyday and Simon gives you feedback and has the time of day for you.
My point is, on the same set up at first the car felt horrible to drive. Following JGM working his magic the feel of the car was changed. Every mapper does a good job I am sure. It's personal preference and at times one that matches your goals and your wallet that you need to take into account.
I think it's unfair to say someone that is less known won't do a good job but sadly I'd rather known whos doing my car by the masses.

JGM has done all my mapping and whilst im in ownership he will be the only one doing it.
Go with what you know, im sure the other mappers have their talents and have lots of happy customers.
OS mapping does not appeal to me regardless if its cheaper, some of the guys doing it have minimal experiance and seem motivated by money rather than customer service. The other issue is any tom dick and harry can set up a mapping business with some free software, some copied maps and go flashing cars and charge a fee and make good money.

JGM,
He has mapped my car twice no with no issues, 1st time was more or less a map to enchance the standard map and to run safely on 97, 2nd time was a new turbo, headers, etc, both times was an Apexi being mapped, and both times faultless!
Simon gets my vote every time!

There are both good, mediocre, and bad mappers using EcuTek and Open Source software, and other tools dependent on ECU.
Ultimately it's not the remap tools you have to worry about but the person using them. Don't believe though for one second that because a mapper uses open source the mapper is no good and just because they use EcuTek they are good.
Thank crunchie for people like Simon-JGM (EcuTek) and Duncan-Race Dynamix (Open Source) keeping both camps in good repute with a string of happy customers. I know there are other tuners out there from both camps not trading on SN for whatever reason that are also well worth considering.
There is room though in scooby heaven for more than one system, however, there is no room for lazy or bad mappers.

Interesting! I run 1.8bar boost which was blowing my plugs out ie misfiring at high rpm. A knowledgeable chap recommended I get NGK race plugs (R7435-8) which caused me to when purchasing as best price I could secure was over £100 for all four ... would your £35 plugs do me next time I change em?
Cheers, TX.

and so the thread will begin to die a slow and painful death, as all these type of threads do.
People will start to slag off other mappers from their own chosen one, whether that be blatant or deviously underhand hidden within a large text, excuses for numbers will appear, then be rubbished.
Then someone will suggest that there be a mappers shootout, what a good idea, but like the turbo shootout it cannot happen, despite the obvious bravado of a few.
Advice on mapper:
Pick someone who you can talk to, someone you can build a tuning relationship with, someone who will answer the phone, get back to you quickly when you email and won't consider you a pest. Pick someone who can map when you need it (obvious but true and important), pick someone who is either local to you or who is willing to travel to you.
Phone a few, have the crack with them and sound them out and then make a decision.
Do not pick someone based on their own opinion of themselves!

[quote=mus 1st class sti type r;9411580]Martin at engine tuner mapped mine on simtek it goes like a stink, never had any problems with it. Off boost driving is brilliant even returns 25 mpg on long runs.
Come on mus whats the point of owning a subaru and not driving it on full boost all the time shame on you
