I would take the torque any day of the week, helps shove you out from the corners, rather than a car that tends to go a bit faster on the straights......

Earlier this year my car was 346bhp & 377ft lbs, it is now 420bhp & 348 ft lbs...> the car use to be stronger pulling from 3800rpm coz of the higher torque > but in a race I would rather have it as it is now, revs all the way to 7500rpm and is still pulling. Only having high torque makes it feel very gear fussy > I was in power at 3500rpm and changing gear by 5500rpm (could hang in to 6000rpm) now the power is everywhere

I'd prefer bigger torque over HP any day as generally I tend to live at the lower end of the rev range day-by-day.

My old 2 litre engine made 355bhp / 312lbs. It was great fun but I had to be over 4000 rpm to make good progress. One time a guy in a Passat diesel wiped the floor with me coming off a roundabout as I was in the wrong gear! I kind of got bored wringing its neck all the time on the daily commute.

In the same car I now have a 2.5 making 450bhp / 485lbs and it is a completely different animal. Doesn't really matter what gear you are in. She just picks up her skirt and goes for it. So anything over 2500 rpm is interesting.

You can even start off in second if you want and it will rev too... there are gobs of torque everywhere to enjoy.

Interesting, you say. A rather novel way of putting it. As an aside have you found with that sort of power you have had to adjust your driving style?

From many of the comments on here, I dont believe that many people have even the slightest idea what theyre talking about.

"I'll have horsepower over torque" etc..... Really? How will you manage that then? Theres a relational triangle: torque - revs - horsepower and theyre all directly linked!

Definitely. It has actually 'slowed me down' if that makes any sense. You can hang back before over taking and take time before adjusting your speed

Handling wise I could just floor it before and she'd be good but now it can get lairy quite quickly. It is still inherently understeer though so not completely worrying on the road.

I took it to a Millbrook CAT driver training for a 1/2 day 1:1 tuition. I drove it back to back with their properly sorted Impreza (only 280 bhp) and spent a couple of hours playing with lift off over steer and things like that. I'm much happier with it but quickly realised I should have spent money on the suspension rather than the noisy bits to make it go fast! I hardly had a chance to get it flat out! Mind you I was in learning mode.

It is booked in at API next week to get coil overs, anti lift, camber bolts and a load of bushes replaced... etc etc.

makes perfect sense to me as the same thing has happened to me. i can't drive for toffee and i find that these car tend to flatter a lot of drivers. but in a big power car it is so easy to go very very fast. i have scared myself on a number of occasions. so i drive like a granny on the roads, and save the racing for the drag track.

it amuses me now at the number of people who want to race. i give them a look then let them tyre screech away from the light while i tootle along.

Completely agree. You doing any events this year? I'm just starting off. Looking for something that doesn't have anything hard to hit!

What are you saying here? I know the relationship between torque, hp and rpm, but what are your 4200 rpm (ish) and 6500 rpm (ish) figures meant to represent? Surely the torque/bhp figures quoted are the peaks and will not occur at the same rpm, so I don't follow what your calcs actually mean. Quite possible that I'm being completely dumb here.

All I have to do is grow a pair and start using it! I'm running out of excuses!
