I think road tax is going to play a big part in the used car market in the future, i have just renewed the MG at about 245quid, i dont find that to bad for a 2.5 v6 tbh, whilst the missus in her little fiat 500 has renewed for about 30quid, THIRTY FOOKEN QUID, FOR A YEAR!!??!!

Pete I think you've made a sound choice there in the Civic 2.2 diesel - same car almost exactly as my brother in law has and he loves it. Torque is the way to go i think - I'm selling my STI as well just now (shameless plug, sorry ) and will go for a diesel estate, again like you for canine reasons mainly, but I'll miss the scoob for sure. Still, times change, and these days you almost can get the best of both worlds with a good diesel engine, both in running costs and performance if driven correctly.
I had a Focus TDCI a few years ago as a company car and it was great to drive - always wanted a classic STI though, and now I've had it for 15 months I don't regret any of the cash that went its way in parts or fuel - it lived up to my expectations and more, not much else you can ask of a car really. Times chance though, and my needs for my car are diffrerent - sadly the STI no longer fits the bill so it quite simply has to go. I'm hoping someone else will enjoy it as much as I have done; and I'm sure you will get a buyer for yours easily given its single owner history. Good luck
Pete

You know what? People call Pete on here and yes he can be a bit of a wind up merchant but the logic and reasoning in this post as to HIS choice of car is spot on.
Enjoy it Pete and don't disappear on us.

The Band L and M Cars will be hammered again and again - honestly, look into the crystal ball and it's easy to see 5 year old Impreza's, worth £5000, facing an annual road tax of £800! How are you going to feel paying that, year in, year out? And it's a retrospective tax too!
Seriously, anyone buying a new Impreza today has to face the fact that they will be keeping it until the scrap man cometh .... it will have very little value after about 3 to 4 years old.
I would do almost anything to own a new Impreza ... financial suicide isn't one of them!

I am shocked that I liked the diesel so much - really shocked!
I went away for 6 weeks and thought about it, I drove eveything I could to swing me away from a Diesel .... but, I put my money where my mouth is - and I kept going back to the Civic Diesel. It just makes sense on every level you look at it from.
My Impreza does about 22mpg around town - the Civic will do about 44mpg .... my fuel bill is halved in an instant. To me, it's like fuel is now 60p a litre!!!
Hell, the loss of interest on the money to buy the Civic is £45 a month - I will be saving £70 a month in fuel costs .... and I do a very small mileage!
The maths just don't add up anymore ... not for new Gas Guzzlers.

I've been looking through the adverts and the prices are all over the place, I cannot find a One Owner example anywhere!
I need to wait for the old numberplate paperwork to come back from the DVLA, take some photo's, select a price to sell and alert the world!

I will still visit ....
The logic is there for all to see really.
I projected myself forward 5 years and tried to imagine the world we would be living in then - what I saw was this:-
Road Tax for the Band M cars at £800. (Impreza WRX's)
Petrol and diesel at £4 a litre. (Civic 55 mpg - WRX's 25 mpg)
Petrol cars shunned - this is happening right now at the dealers, they are struggling to sell new petrols. (Civic still worth something - WRX's not wanted)
Road Tax for the Band E cars at £200. (Civic Diesel)
Subaru UK will it still be here? parts prices horrendous and parts really hard to come by, only specialists left to service/repair.
Honda Dealerships in every town, parts can be bought anywhere (as the Civic is pretty numerous).
Silly little things like, Haynes Manual for Civic .... none for the Impreza.
I know you only live once - which is why I have bought a Civic Type S diesel with 340 Nm of torque ....... living and enjoying driving without the pain of the Impreza running costs.

You're missing the point that the diesel Civic is far better to drive than the petrol ..... the lower fuel bills are just the icing on top

In a sensible world the Civic is a great choice Pete. It will be like losing a body part though when the Scoob drives off.
Hope the new motor gives you some of the pleasure the wagon has.

Yes the special one ps lewis has kept me laughing for ten years with his antics
please keep on posting
Your a legend
even at NBO 6 people were wearing
I am ps lewis t shirts
noone else has a cult following like you
The diesel is a wise choice when I got my wrxd instead of a STi or 330s I did my sums and will save 18k over five years it's like I'm getting a free car
Hence the money saved will go towards a cosworth or whatever the car is in a few years time
500 to the tank every time at £70 a shot is the great part and £200 servicing a year and £155 road tax
I agree with others the value of 2001-2006 subarus are going to plumett with £400 rfl which will always go up without fail
Gordon brown killed the Subaru Market with this stealth tax

Zero Options ......
It's a relief to find a car which is loaded without having silly optional 'Packs' like VW and Audi ...... doesn't it make you sick the fact that I asked for a steering wheel on the Audi A3 and they said it would be part of the 'Steering pack' at an extra £899 ..... the pedals are part of the 'Driving Pack' at £499 and the seats are part of the 'Comfort Pack' at £1199 ..... you get the idea and it's pathetic VW/Audi!!!

Running the Civic rather than a WRX will save me £1800 a year - after 10 years I have got £18,000 ...... a free car!! As you say!
Against a WRX STi the savings are even higher (given the much bigger loss in value).
Times have changed .... people are changing with them .... there is no place for an Impreza Turbo in today's world - it's sad but true.

Box plugged in! Then surely it can be unplugged for warranty/service work Why wait 37 months? may hurt the fuel economy though!

The redline is the redline! This is maximum revs, just because it is lower does not mean you are not thrashing it!
My girlfriends Hyundai Getz CRTD+ turbo diesel (over 100bhp from a 1.5 turbo diesel, £35 road tax, same power as my old xr2!) is like a switch, below 1800 revs nothing, then loads of torques as the turbo spools up, then its all over by 4.5K. I suppose you get used to it but I still prefer a petrol engine to be honest. I can see your reasoning for a diesel though. She gets 40mpg and that's solid around town in traffic driving.

I presume Petes included the costs of a new turbo and drive chain somewhere down the lline...these modern diesels are highly strung individuals.!
lets face it the cheapest way forward would have been a 5 year old impreza wagon !
