the opinions you have come across seem to come from sephardic jews (southern europe/middle east origin), the majority of jews are ashkenasi (northern europe/poland/russia origins) and probably had no family history of ever living under islamic law and probably fear it. I've heard many stories of problems jews have had living in some ME countries (see iran) but you only hear the bad things i guess.

also, in my opinion one can't just say being a zionist and so wanting a jewish state must be bad. A large % of Israelis who would tell you that they are zionist (by definition they must be, they bloody moved there!) and they want the 2 state solution, open borders, peace, joint access to Jerusalem or whatever etc. Its the aggresive zionists (probably russian origin americans) who demand and shout and ruin it for a lot of Israelis.

Also, you get lots of Jews in England who are very pro the idea of the state of Israel, don't keep any jewish laws though, they are very much secular but tribal. But I've yet to meet one who thinks the Israeli goverment are doing the right thing, but then I don't mix with idiots. (apart from on here )

sorry for the waffle, its just this whole thing is so far from black and white unfortunately.

I belive that to be very much the case, as much as I bet there are many Palestinians who really don't condone the firing of rockets into Israel; the act of which brings on more counter attacks from Israel. I think it doesn't take a genius or even an education to realise that tit-for-tat attacks and counter attacks does not work.

I think its much like Northern Island; two factions with equally seperate views that just can't get on with each other. NI has improved no end since the peace agreements, but there are still nutjobs going round asasinating people in vengence. The average person simply just wants to get on with their day to day life.

I noted some people commented saying Israel is a sh*t hole. I've been there, and certainly alot of places round there are quite nice. Nicer than places 10miles from me where if I walked down a particular street at night I might be taken to task by the locals because I'm white (Multicultural Britain ), but thats another issue. Likewise its only particular areas in Israel that are suffering problems, whereas areas further south, like Eilat are pretty peaceful (just don't hire a speed boat and go in to Jordanian waters ).

I have read your posts and have learned a lot about the different factions of Judaism (if that is the right word) than i knew and understood before.

Good posts Ted.
I have been out on the ground over there through out this.
I had, lets say some interesting moments.
(lots of guns and lots of religious tension)
It is a complicated situation out there. Six of one and half a dozen of the other.
You have to understand the holocaust, jewish history and how it shaped modern Israel.
I do fear for the future for many of the every day people that live that region.

Seems to me that you can't blame the Jews for being suspicious that the aid ships might be carrying a load of missiles etc. which could be used against them. If they just want to check what is on the ships at a Jewish port and then allow the aid to go to its destination surely that is fair enough.

Not having been there we cannot say how all the problems with the boarding party developed as it did.
