I have mentioned before that I think that violent crime is getting worse as time goes by. There seems to be little value put on life any more by so many of the criminal classes. I get the impression that more of them are prepared to kill to try and avoid being identified if they are caught at it!

It has certainly been another sad day for us in West Cumbria today , it has been surreal since last November and the floods . The death toll is somewhere between 12 and 18 I believe and 25 injured , some critically. A rampage by a taxi driver with a shot gun and a sniper type rifle , to be fair in my experience 99% of taxi drivers are a sub-species anyway. RIP all those unfortunate souls who lost their lives , I knew at least one of them.

Not great news today really. If someone is going to do that why not just shoot themselves?

No doubt the reasonable firearms owners will now be treated like second class citizens again thanks to this bozo.

I too am from Cumbria, just down the road from Whitehaven in Seaton. Moved away years ago. I just hope Whitehaven doesn't become one of those words you associate with murder and death, like Hungerford and Dunblane etc. It's been a very bad few weeks for Cumbria.

As I've already posted, the gun arguments should be for another day.

Yes good old Charlton and the NRA used to have the neck to show up after mass murders in the US extolling the virtues of the second ammendment and guns in general , classic trite comments like 'it aint the gun that kills it the person holding it' etc , I say tell that to the families of the dead.

btw I know people who own guns, and whilst they repulse me, I don't necessarily agree with banning everything. I think we need to avoid the usual knee-jerk reactions, and work out what could/should be done to help prevent this happening again. I suspect there is no simple answer to that!

People are talking about this guy using a snipers rifle, I don't know much about guns, but surely they canot be legal, anyone know?

Witnesses have said he had a gun with a telescopic sight. Other witnesses have said it was a shotgun with a sight.

That may be a question that will never be answered.

Not taking anything away from todays events, but committing awful acts is nothing new, whether it be a gun, bomb or whatever. People do this, and the reasons will be different but I can't help thinking you must have a screw loose to go this far, no matter what may 'tip a person over the edge'. Plenty of people have bad things happen to them in life, but I'd say most don't go on to do such awful things.

Personally, I don't think we should use this thread to debate the banning of guns, as banning doesn't stop such acts, and it takes it away from focusing on how awful this was, and feeling for all involved.

I might not have known anyone involved, but my thoughts go out to those who have lost loved ones.

I don't think it's so shocking. Yes it's very unusual but it doesn't take much for the fabric of society to unravel. In today's times when people are under more and more pressures if they have the means there to act on some feelings then the potential for bad actions is there. Once you've crossed a line as this man did then he may have seen no going back and the mayhem ensues. It may come down to a planned spree or an opportune moment caused by a weapon to hand and an argument that got out of hand.

One thing I often consider as somebody who believes this life is final and there is no god or afterlife to face that if you were to do something like this then there are no real consequences to face if you are prepared to deal with yourself at the end of it. That final bit in itself goes against all normal animal instincts but it does mean that in the personal battle a person may face these acts carry less weight. I guess in a world with people waking up to the fact that there is no god we may see more acts like this...

As for the banning guns thing... I bet this happens far more often in places where you can get guns easily. supply and demand, opportunity and desire. Both driving factors. It's the same argument as dangerous dogs almost.

Not really the time, maybe the place for this argument and speculation, let's wait until the dead are buried, respects paid and the facts uncovered before getting into this

There is no answer to what can happen when someone falls out of their tree like this. How can the authorities possibly prevent such a thing without previous knowledge of a possible mental problem. Its a terrible tragedy and I feel very sorry for all those affected by what happened. I think it has to be regarded as part of life and just hope it does not happen too often.

I don't think guns laws would have any effect either.

Tried to hail a cab this morning. He shot straight past me...

In all serious tho, pretty shocking and the last place you'd expect something like that to happen really.

Well said!

I had the same discussion with my missus a few weeks ago, and basically said the same, whatever you think when you are alive, IMO means nothing when you are dead, because it is all over.

We even discussed this point, (yeah its wrong and its full of the devil, blahh blahh blahh) If a chap REALLY gets off on killing people, spends his life fantasizing about it, and then goes on a rampage, killing himself at the end, he has probably had a much happier life than many "normal" folk.

Much like the guy in Bradford then, fair point.

EDIT: Without the killing himself at the end part obviously, but then I guess we may hear more on that .....
