#61
As a child growing up in the RAF I was taken on many visits to see aircraft by various guys,at Binbrock up north watching The Lightning take off then vert climb awesome. This thread has brought great memories back, thanks! .One sight never forgot going to our northern defence station seeing all the Bloodhound rockets on launch pads standing in the control trailer manned 24/7 the officer locked the tracking in on an airliner overhead and to watch acres of bloodhounds following it.I had an Uncle Mac Phee flew Phantoms, when we were camping in Corwall as a kid used to buzz us,crazy sod, good days!

Just a story that my old man told me make you smile, when he was in the far east during the war he was a Flight sgt,he had orders to transport 2 high ranking American General from their air field in a Dakota to a secret airfield 5hr flight.Well my old man, pilot, navigator went on the pee the night before the flight drinking the local brew a bit like pernod, one notch up from antifreeze. The next morning Generals arrive strapped in all checks done they get airbourne, straight away their VIPS nod off,the crew have rageing thirsts so ofter several coffees they all settle down,4 hrs later ny old man wakes up to find pilot/navigator snoring the plane is on auto pilot,he managed to wake the navigator but pilot was out cold drunk the coffee mixed with night before booze, the outcome was the navigator landed the plane,in those days lot of people flew but were not pilots.Well they landed just, the Generals complemented the crew for the smooth flight dissapeared off with their staff, pilot still asleep. He could not remember getting on the plane afterwards ah happy days!

I used to get all my crew to have a go at landing the tin triangle, the Air Electronics Officer was the best at it, almost as good as the co-pilot. used to use up a bit of time in a more interesting way!
