Surtees at brands hatch is a good one to practise what your discussing.

Trick for this was to keep neutral power on, not to accellerate but to keep the weight balanced as you turn in as previously mentioned.

And if you want practise at keeping the power on at entry, Paddock hill will teach you quickly (or youll die )

When i bought my scoob it had 2 budget tyres o the front. This induced catostriphic understeer. 2 GSD3's later and it was 1000% improvement. Cant imagine what they would have been like on the rear!
Brands Hatch from Newcastle is a bit of a go! Closest to me is Croft. Will defo see what they have available.

Barum tyres are Continental's budget tyre, think a decent mid ranger (bit like Kleber are really Michelin), not the best but not the worst. The rest sound pap though!

Weird thing here is the oversteer. As standard that car should understeer, its safer and more predictable so it was set up that way, this is why an ARB to tighten the back up is a good mod.

I'd wonder if your car has had something like that done or a combination of poor tyres/fuel spill added to this. the only time I got the rear out was in extreme conditions and on the power.

5t.

Once the tyres are done it may also be worthwhile having the geometrey checked if the car tends to feel the same after the tyre change as it may have been curbed at some point causing changes to geometry.

I've got Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric (235/40 R18) on my car and they perform very well, both in the dry and in the wet

I have a theory that once any one tyre loses grip ( on a Scoob ) then that dictates the level of grip at all the others. I once did an enormous tank-slapper at 30 mph, and the ONLY mistake I made was trying to wind corrective lock on.... ( RWD born and bred ).

If I'd re-applied the throttle she would have pulled herself straight.

Luckily, like you I missed all the solid stuff and simply reversed away from the looming hedgework

nice thing was I didn't see any serious curbing on the alloys, so perhaps this may not be that significant but right in that its still worth checking. I was planning to fit a set of eibachs in july and was planning on doing the geometry check then, depending on cost may do it as the same time as the tyres.

I believe unconditioning yourself to do something is as hard or harder than learning it in the first place, especially instinctively. Coming out of it I was convinced that somehow I forgot to press the fourth pedal that allows my itentions and direction of travel to match.

Folks,

One last one before I part with some cash -

Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 - £100 (backordered/OOS in most places)
Goodyear Eagle F1 F1 Asymmetric £100
Avon ZZ3 - £95
Bridgestone RE050 - £105

All prices are per 215/45/R17 tyre inc fitting.

I want to go for the GS-D3s based on feedback here and that the tread pattern reminds me slightly of the Yokohama AVS Sports I had a long time ago that saved my life at least once in the wet.

From reading around some people were not as pleased with the F1 Asymmertics as they were with the GSs....Just need to now find them!

Disagreement, thoughts and comments appreciated.

Thx.

Vredstein sessanta's, good value and cheaper than the above
If you want really good tyres then go for the Michelin pilot sport 3, oh and you have put down 215, I take it you mean 225?

You have to go a long way to beat the STI std. fit RE-070, IMHO.

Especially on track, semi-serious use. Not the quietest, and can tramline a bit, but about the same price... comes as 225/45/17 but don't let that worry you

also consider Vredestein Ultrac a budget tyre but will put some Branded tyres to shame

Bridgestone are great for scoobs due to strong tyrewalls but the downside is the strong tyrewalls causes "Tram lining"

The RE070's, one of my all time favourites not everyone likes them though (normally those who cant drive very well )

Had the ultrac's on my old omega, put the GS-D3's I replaced them with to shame, should have gone for the ultrac's again

If i went to 18"s i'd use either PS3's or Vreadys

TOYO's T1R's are great if want your Car to be a understeering and tyre squeeling wreck
But they won't tramline and i spose far better than the mixed bag of crap on there at the minute IMHO

I Had a very similar situation and spun my car luckily not hurting the car or myself.
My Front tyres were past their best I changed to Toyos Tr1s all around from camskill and it was night and day.
There is a bend near were I live which is really challenging when you turn in it is like it has two apex's very easy to put foot down and realise your fooked. Before I changed my tyres my car felt very wobbly going through this bend with a scary amount of negative feeling and understeer going through the corner. Once the tyres were changed I could go through the same bend very flat with confidence in the wet!!
Check your rear bushes on the suspension this made a big difference on my wrx too.

I run T1R's on my classic and they are very good, lightweight car lockeddown and setup for oversteer....On my Newage I run sessantas and they are better than the PS2's I had before, although whilst predictable they squeal all the way round roundabouts on hard entry... ride them round and nail the exit...fun though !

Bugger, I have 215s fitted on all 4. I'm not sure if the rim is 17 x 7 or 7.5 as I have both listed in the manual. I'd take that to imply 17 x 7, unless the wrong size tyre is on all of them and it still would fit!

Depends if yours is a STi or a WRX

Sti (6 speed and Brembo brakes) has 17x7.5 (MY01-MY04) 17x8 (MY05+) so 225 although 235 is fitted to JDM 17x8 and works better IMHO.
WRX (5 speed and 4pot brakes) has 17x7 so 215
if gold wheel could be off an STi so 225, but could also be WRX300 wheels which are gold 17x7

bung a picture up if in doubt

Also if a WRX may not have front limited slip Diff like the STi's which does make a huge difference in the Wet IMHO
