I'm not especially pro royal and I can appreciate the points on both sides. But the Queen mother did more than just sit around watching corgi's and going to the races.

In WW1 she worked as a nurse tending to some pretty horrifc injuries. In the 1940's she and her family stayed in London in the middle of the blitz and every day would visit the remains of peoples homes and lives.

In spite of political pressure to go to Canada she decided that she should stay in face the same dangers as the rest of london.

How many of us nowadays would do the same thing? If, for example London was being bombed every night today how many of us would choose to stay? Not many, and i'm sure not many politicians would either(I hope Tony reads and learns from this).

Unfortunatley, it seems that one of the things that we have lost in the 60 odd years since WW2 is a sense of duty, honour and of greater national good. I saw glimpses of this returning in the Falklands crises(I was 14 at the time) and in the gulf war but it soon evaporates.

Nowadays being patriotic is sticking a paper union jack with a photo of Sgt Tommy Atkins in the middle from the Sun newspaper in the window.

Now, i'm not saying that the nationalism preached by the NF is good. BUT we desperatley need a sense of greater purpose, and something to rally around. Remember when we did really well in Euro 96? The whole country was behind it, and it gave most people a huge lift. The same will happen at this years world cup(for 2 or 3 games anyway )

If we write off the past as irrelevant for today, then how do we learn from it? If we assume that because people live in Luxury have it easy that then assumes we don't! Sure we all have worries about money, losing our jobs, etc etc. But those in privileged positions should(and in the QM's case did) have the worries of national responsibility and service, they should(and in the QM's case did) forgo any sense of self serving and serve US, the people.
I think i'll keep my normal life thank you very much!

So not for the sake of some royal flag waving but for the sake of the 1000's of Londoners she helped during WW2, the 100's of soldiers she help save in WW1 and the millions of pounds she helped raise for good causes I say rest in peace queen mum and a life well done.

As for my comment about japs, whats wrong with that. Ever heard of British being called Brits, Australians called Aussies etc.Just an abbreviation mate. Hope it caused no offence. thats half the trouble these days everyone has to be so PC its pathetic.

I don't know about the nurse in WW1, she was only 14 when that war started, but she certainly stayed in the country with the King during WW2.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/sta...lideshow/6.stm

With her visits to the East End and other parts of London during the Blitz it is little wonder that the people that survived the Blitz hold her in such high esteem.

Definitely one of the last of the great Royals.

Steve, You have to remember that the Queen Mum started where all of us started, at the bottom, ok she was lucky enough to marry into the royal family but they do actually bring more revenue into this country than any other part of the tourist industry.
Its like me saying to you if your grandmother died and i said well tough, i think you would be hacked off, the fact is that she has always been probably the most highest profile royal of all but does that mean that you cant respect the dead?
Even if you dont like what she stood for you can atleast understand why alot of people say she was "a good un" as she did alot (along with most royals) to keep the moral up in this country when it had its bad patches.
She was 101 and that was a good age for anyone

Once again, Tony Burns feels compelled to spout a load of tosh, and I quote:

"Steve, You have to remember that the Queen Mum started where all of us started, at the bottom, ok she was lucky enough to marry into the royal family but they do actually bring more revenue into this country than any other part of the tourist industry."

Two huge inaccuracies in that statement, perhaps the following multiple choice quiz will help you spot them:

1. Was Elizabeth Bowes Lyons born:

(a) the poor daughter of a Glasgow fish wife; or

(b) the wealthy daughter of Lord and Lady Glamis and enjoyed living in Glamis Castle, Scotland?.

2. Which of the following is the greater contributor the British tourist industry:

(a) The Queen Mum; or

(b) Legoland?

If you got (b) to both of the above, take another bite of Easter Egg and congratulate yourself. If you got (a) to both, you must be Mr Burns.

LB,
When you get your facts right you may make it on to mastermind
Try these
Elizabeth AngelaMarguerite Bowles-Lyons

Born: 4 Aug 1900 at: London, England

Father: Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne

As for lego land..... hmmmmmm prefer alton towers meself as more to do Plus the royals do actually pull more revenue in for the country as a tourist attraction than any other, just think that all those people who will sign the books for the Queen Mothers death will well outweigh the numbers that lego land will ever have going thru their doors!

My dear Mr Burns,

I think you'll find that my facts are correct, unlike yours.

First, it's Bowes Lyon not "Bowles Lyons".

Second, you may wish to know that Lord Glamis, the title held by the Queen Mother's father at the time of her birth, inherited the Earldom of Strathmore in 1903.

Yours nitpickingly

Emery - you are a to$$er

There is more than a little evidence of her giving a bit more than a fig.

This thread was started to allow those that wanted to, show her some respect. Whatever my or your feelings on her you should show everyone some respect and leave your feelings until later when we'll all be more than happy to enter into a constructive debate about the future of the Monarchy and any alternative suggestions for an apolitcal head of state - or indeed arguments that we don't need one at all. If you could possibly leave the large chip on your shoulder out of that debate its possible it might even be a worthwhile discussion.

Chaps,

Has to be said that there are some real w4nker5 on this BBS !!

She was a great lady and was one of the last great royals. Not a silly self-centered cow like Diana was ! Stood for a lot of things that people in this country have now forgotten.

She did work as a nurse in WW1 and did stay amongst the thick of it during the Blitz. She also thought that Diana was a silly cow so she goes a long way with me.

I find it sooo sad that sooo many people claim to be true Brits but only get remotely patriotic when the England footy side play ! (and then they go and act like to55ers and trash somewhere !) This country has worked and fought over the years to be a powerful and highly respected place. Trouble is that there are too many people that don't respect the past (like Blair) and would rather do us down !! How patriotic are the Yanks and the Aussies ?! Alot more than us - and they do it right too !!

God bless her - hope she rests in peace !!

She was a great lady - period !!

I find it hard to understand people who didn't even know her going up to Windsor to cry on the telly ??

Its not surprising she lived to 102.Im sure my nan would have made it that far if she didnt have to use the NHS and have a hard life.

I don't wish anyone dead but the only thing that bothers me about it is that we are not going to get a day off work because of it.
You'd think after leeching off us for years the Royals would have least have the decency to give us a day or two off work.
