12 hour night shifts :-(
#32
Ohhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!! This is something very close to my heart.
Shifts are crap and that involves nights, been doing shifts for over 6 years and can not wait for the day I get off them.
I work for big printers in the Yorkshire area, there are no breaks in a 12hour shift and I find you get the worst kind of people working shifts as they simply have no lives, making them first class *******.
For me, it`s made me deprest, angry and constantly tied.

You should get a 15 minute break every 4 hours, and a half hour break within the 12, all paid. Check this with your union FOC, but these are all regulated under the EU Working Time Directive, and also part of the BPIF agreements. Also, if you work with computers there are Display Screen Equipment Regulations to factor in. These may or may not include breaks, but ensure that your work schedule is structured to get you away from the VDU periodically.

We have both webs and sheetfed, it does seem to be a printers thing been shafted on breaks.
The whole set with number 1`s number 2`s and assistants is just bollocks, it creates a crap atmosphere.. The so called number 1`s do **** all which results in every man for himself, so the management get away with murder as the workforce don`t bond to fight back.
Stay away from big Printing firms as they are a horrible place to work.

Every so often we used to have a big military exercise which meant we were on duty 24/7 until it finished. All part of the job of course.
The worse bit was that we had to sleep in a hangar and the groundcrew would be working all night on the aircraft mending them, always seemed to be with big hammers! Coupled with that we had the runaround every so often when the senior officers had to make decisions to counter simulated threats and every time they made the same mistakes as the last time!!!
Best way as ever was to keep laughing, eventually we would get scrambled for a long flight and at least we were out of the madhouse!
Since our pay was calculated on a 24 hour day, we never got overtime naturally!

I sometimes get this, this week being one such week. Finished 6am Mon, slept 9am-1pm. Went to bed at 10pm and laid awake 'til after 2am. Last night I went up at midnight, knew I wouldn't drop off and came back down for an hour and watched Top Gear until feeling drowsy, then went back up and still knew I wouldn't be sleeping, so went back down and dozed through TG until 7am when the missuse vacated the bed and I managed to drop off for another 3 hours The worst part is that if I manage to sleep tonight, that gives me just tomorrow to be 'normal', and I'm bloody w*rking (2nd job) all day and on Friday I'm back on nights

Our shift pattern is 4 on, 4 off.
That's 2 nine hour days (0900 - 1800) followed by 2 fifteen hour nights (1800 - 0900) and then 4 days off.
I love it and like others have said could not go back to a 9-5 job.

I feel your pain, I do 12.5hr shifts on permanent nights, 2 nights one week, then 4 the next. 7 weeks starting on Mondays, then 3 weekends which are ALWAYS the weekends I get invited to things, then back to Mondays.
Although working in central London driving from site to site is soooo much easier at night!

Well I'd like to say I'm stuck on a night shift myself but I'm not. I'm raving my pants off at Stinkys Peephouse in Leeds after dropping a super set myself earlier. Also on a natural - no drugs in sight.

5-week rota: F/S/S nights 1830-0630 - rest of the week off
F/S/S days 0630-1830 - rest of the week off
Relief week - could be any two shifts to cover gaps on our desk - rest of the week off
M/T/W/T days - weekend off
M/T/W/T nights - complete week off
I have trouble sleeping during the day so nights are always a struggle.
Still, its only 16 days attendance over a 5-week period and take that middle weekend off and you get a fortnight away for the loss of only 3 days annual leave
