It makes me feel sick that photo. I've been joining in with the other threads such as "£1000 watches?" and reading this thread something inside me didn't feel right at all, especially as Ive just read that £2000 can buy a whole farm in Africa!

Calm down - I have actually already bought a farm in Africa - it is actually a nominal farm that creates sustainable wealth for 300-500 people.
If you can't see the other reason to calm down then there is nothing I can say to help!

I'm going to stick my head above the parapet and say bollocks to donating money to africa.
Sad though it is, it seems that africa has constantly been in a state of chaos (which, naturally, can be cured by donating money) since Michael Buerke got back from Ethiopia in 1984.
The only thing I find strange, is that despite near on 25 years of crisis appeals, charity telethons and emotional blackmail. The place seems to still be held in a vice like grip of war, famine, rape and lawlessness.
Quite frankly, I'm sick of constantly being reminded how fortunate I am and how desperate these circumstances are and how just 2 quid a month will supply fresh water.
Never has the phrase "lost cause" been more appropriate when it comes to describing a continent. So as far as I'm concerned, Africa can **** off. I say spend the money on something that actually has a fighting chance of making a difference. Flame me if you like, I dont care, it's how I feel.

Africa is a continent of 30,221,532 square kilometers
Africa has a total population of around 85 million people
Africa has around 52 different sovereign countries ranging from Egypt and South Africa north and south to Equatorial Guinea and Sudan east and west.
It is a hugely diverse land mass, geography, climate, ecology, culture, history, evolution, politic and economy.
Can you honestly say that you think your comments apply to all of Africa?
The comments you make are true of Africa; so are comments to talk about advanced industrialisation, or education, or development, or investment. It is a very diverse place.
Contributions to Africa can make a difference - and at least in as much as I can do without actually going there, I hope that my contributions do go to areas where a difference can be made and more importantly can be made sustainable.

I would find it very difficult to say, "no Im not cooking for you tonight, youll be dead soon anyway so whats the point"
Im not an expert on this at all, Ive only done a bit of research tonight and came across some images and facts that has filled my heart with compassion. I dont really think that the charities pretend to try and sort out the wars, lawlessness etc. I think they're just trying to help those suffering as a result of corrupt governments etc, and yes it will probably be ongoing, unfortunately, but Im sure those that receive aid would say it makes all the difference in the world to them and their families.
