A standard vRS at 228 lb/ft and your car would probably be a match for it. Mine running 37% more torque and bhp would have given you trouble. I aren't claiming they're the fastest car on Earth and cannot be beaten, just that they are surprisingly quick for what they are, especially when you consider their fuel economy too. My mates Scoob is running 300bhp, but only 290 lb/ft which is where I mount my challenge. BHP gets you off the line, torque gets you ahead.

Probably an 05+ JDM Spec C, then throw money at the suspension and chassis. Maybe eek a bit more oomph to get 330-350, but no need for any more than that for me.

I hear what everyone is saying and I don't really get why people moan about these kinda things?

I live right on the outskirts of Cheshire(yes, the crime rate is low)...I am 28 with 4 years no claims and a Bug WRX with my 27 fiance on policy...and it is £55 a month....
....I drive my bug all week for work(about 150 miles) but I have found a few 'country lane' routes into Stoke-on-Trent and the scoob just puts a smile on my face evrytime I open it up....and I have had her for over 2 years now!

When it rains.....I still get to smile.....

When it snows....I am in heaven!!!! I took the 'country routes' during the snow months and was lovin it....only saw about 3 other cars(Land Rovers) up in those hills!!!
I was driving up hills that others had abandoned on!(And I only had
Falken FK452's on)
I just love everything Subaru!!!!
My Bug has 103k on her.....2001.....probably only worth 3k now?(if that) but I ain't planning on selling! (Bought her for 5.7k 2.5 years ago with 69k on clock)
Anyways...like I said...I love driving her and I don't mind the 27mpg(yes, thats what I get...)

Quite happy with my Diesel A4 drive it like a **** and it still does 45mpg, wheelspin in 1st 2nd (and 3rd in the wet) and it sure aint that slow

Not in the slightest bit interested in 0-60 or drag-racing Real world driving where grunt out of bends has always been my bag. The three times I went to Elvington I was bored witless, but give me a challenging track like Cadwell or some awesome Dales roads and I'm in Heaven.

id have a clio 172 over 106 gti any day of the week as the tourqe is really well spread through out the range and they go tri pod when pushed hard in the bends

Funnily enough, I've done just that- taken both out and I came to a totally different conclusion.

And for me, the Type S is not as good as the Type R. Granted the 2.2 CDTi engine is very nice and yes there is ample torque- and 55mpg is just heavenly I know, but the feel and revs of the Type R is just something else all together. Now as you probably already know due to the peaky power delivery it doesn't give you the same low down kick you get from a turbo, but almost redlining it before each lightning shift to drop back into the powerband is just so much more fun IMO, feels like a racecar (... just could use some more torque when you're not in the mood for gunning it).

Losing revs- you're not pushing it hard enough, proper shifts and you don't drop out of the powerband. I'm a bug STi owner but I've driven a fair few of these VTECs by now and you have to change your style completely to get the best from them- not always an easy thing to do and not for everybody.

Same story with my friend's Astra 1.9 CDTi- I'd say thats just as quick as the Honda diesel although the delivery is a bit different, again not as fun as a revvy petrol in my eyes. The feel, sound etc is no match.

Then again, I'm still 22, so maybe I see things a little differently.

Insurance- was lucky with mine I reckon, 22 with an STi PPP and I pay just shy of 1k, fully comp in what is considered a low-risk area. I'm dreading renewal though after reading most of the above.

The Audi diesel forum will be glad to hear this. Diesels are what they are and good at what they do - the afore mentioned BMW three and a half litre is quite something. But I like to rev an engine, work a 'box and hear that wail. Diesels don't do it at all for me. The A4 chassis sounds like it can't put down the power either - clearly too much wheelspin

It gets on my nerves all this - my classic impreza is 11 years old for god sake - of course newer cars will be better in many ways - I would be worried if they were not. My impreza has 290 bhp / 310 ib/ft torque and am sorry but is more fun then my pervious newage Sti, my friends civic type R that I driven loads, my clio 172 cup and many other newer cars. A good classic is a bargin - spend a couple of grand on exhaust, remap, suspension (maybe 5-6 K in total - you ar all putting the impreza against new cars that cost twics as much.

You tell me how many other cars of 11 years old that are as much fun to drive. I know for a fact my impreza would have nearly most stuff on the road up to 100mph. I drive the car cus I love the sound and that fact that it won so many events.

You have all lost the reason why these cars are so good - they gave performance to the average man in the street like the cosworthe before them etc - is sad that you all dis them now you have moved on. a shame ( have stepped off soap box now)

ade_sti- very true about classics being good value but the demise of the Impreza and its kind will most likely be because of the newer generation hot-hatchs tbh.

Many of the latest VXR/FRS/VW R/MPS etc sort of vehicles are starting to offer similar performance while giving lesser emisions, better economy, cheaper insurance and better practicality, leaving our rally-inspired toys a bit ordinary in the wider picture of things.

So much tuning support for the newer hot-hatches as well these days... already we're seeing threads about what were once considered top model scoobs struggling against so and so in a vauxhall lol. Unfortunately times are changing, and subaru seems like its struggling to maintain the gap.

I agree, it's hardly fair to compare far more modern (and expensive) cars to an old Impreza. There is no way that a turbodiesel powered car, no matter how powerful or advanced is ever going to be as satisfying to drive as a turbo-petrol (or large n/a petrol) car. I honestly don't see how any self-respecting petrolhead could argue against this. The VAG tdi engines are particuarly bad IMO, yes they can make huge torque figures and are pretty quick once rolling but they are rough, sound like tractors, have a ridicuously narrow powerband (nothing, nothing, nothing, POWER for a couple of seconds and repeat). If you are buying a car with economy in mind then a diesel can make sense but if performance and enjoyment is a priority I would go for a petrol car everytime. I'm also surprised that so many people are bothered about a cars 'image' - why would you care if others think that Imprezas are chavvy?!?!?! I love Imprezas and couldn't care less what others think of them, as long as you enjoy driving the car then surely that's all that matters. I'm not surprised that more modern cars with big tuning scenes are turning out high power figures and giving scoobs a run for their money - it's called progress! Why would you care though, surely driving on the roads is for fun (and getting from a to b!), not for goading other road users into races to try and prove who's got the fastest car.

Exactly. You have to drive the car right. If it's a turbo petrol car then expect to have to keep it revving quite high. The low down torque of diesals is only an advantage if you don't drive the petrol car right.

Last November to March maybe, but how often do we get a proper winter ? We usually get 1" of snow on one day. The same argument could be levelled that a Scoob is over-equipped from March to November having to lug around the weight of an unnecessary AWD system which affect its handling and ruins its fuel economy, and around town its excessive performance is as useful as a bikini in Iceland.
