Whats your thoughts on this guys after a chat with David at API.
He thinks maybe cracked turbo, common on the 2.5 STI?
Reasons for this are follows:
Oil consumption hi, but no smoke. But there is sooty deposits apear on te rear bumper. Oil passing in to the exhaust side of the turbo is obviously hot and vaporise the oil, i.e the soot. Because it isnt burning, no smoke. If it was rings then the oil would be smoke before it hit the turbo so should see some smoke?
Smell of exhaust gasses in expansion tank but never looses water or over heats. Again, the turbo water system could be cracked in to the exhaust side of the turbo and contaminating the water. If it was rings, shouldnt have this effect on the water. also, if it was head gasket etc, thereoy it should over heat or pressurise the water system thus loosing water?
Car runs bad at 2200 - 3000 rpm but not 100% all the time. Contaminantes in the inlet part of the turbo, i.e exhaust fumes, will change the way the "Bang" occures and thus up set the knock sensor or the 02 sensor. The ECU trys to accomodate for this by retarding the ignition. If it was rings or head gasket, should be the same fault 100% of the time?
What do you guys think??

Mine put Crap all over the rear Bumper When the Piston Cracked on cylinder 2, the intercooler was full of oil and when starting first thing in a morning it was blowing it out all over the rear of the car,
Certainly wouldnt rule out a compression test just to settle you mind

It is a VF43 turbo. There is very little, if none at all of oil in the intercooler and never smokes in the morning. The soot on the bumper only appears after a longish run too.
I am going to try and drop the CAT pipe if i can too look, if not, it will be over to API for a nosey me thinks.
