I wouldn't let the fact that it can't read a particular .csv file of yours relegate it to viewing cat videos just yet.
If you're looking for a file system I used to use Air Sharing for storing documents, videos and pictures in a DOS like format, but don't really have a need for it any more. My main purpose was viewing .pdf files on the go, but now I just click on them in email and load them into iBooks. A bit like you're trying to do with your .csv file, but for me - as usual - it just works.

I was going to suggest air sharing. Turns the device into a networked hard drive basically so upload to it from a pc over wireless via a web browser. Then open the air sharing app on iphone/ipad and tap on the file to view it. And it works flawlessly.

After a lot more fiddling about csv touch still doesn't work from email (it isn't featured yet), but quick look works if a "degrees" symbol is removed from the ignition advance column heading. You'd think it would load and just not show a character rather than refusing to load, but there you go.
The "open in numbers" option seems to have disappeared from mail now, even after deleting csv touch. Previously there were 3 options - quick view, csv touch, numbers.

Just converted some wma in iTunes and it won't sync with the iPad.
"attempting to copy to the disk failed. An unknown error occurred (0xE8004006)"
Googling it seems to be a common error. More bug hunting to do.
I hate this ****.

Now this shouldn't happen when you connect an iPad to iTunes, and afterwards you try to open any apps and they open and instantly close even after a power off/on.

Your App Store / iTunes account will keep a record of the apps you have purchased, plus they should also be in the Applications section of iTunes and thus you can simply sync them over. If they are gone from the Applications section in iTunes you can download them again without payment, simply find the app and click Buy and it'll tell you that you have already purchased it. Official Apple Support doc on this can be found [url=http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519[here[/url]

I could only find a few results and none that were regarding the iPad, anyhow the result is the same, you have a corrupt file in your library. Before you restore try a hard reset, press and hold the power and home buttons don't let go until it restarts.

Thanks. No backup was done before it crashed so updated firmware and manually downloaded all the apps again then it successfully synced and now appears relatively stable.
All these errors and instability related to corruption or the wrong character encoding in a text file seem to suggest it is quite a fickle OS. Will see how it goes.
For games and browsing if you don't want flash 9/10.
For speed usually 9/10.
For stability and compatibility compared with expectation 0/10.
App store compared with expectation of things that just work 2/10.
Overall 5/10.
In comparison a £150 net book is far more impressive to me except it is thicker and the fan occasionally runs, and you have to pay more for 10 Hour battery life.

App store compared with expectation of things that just work - oh there is no app store only expensive Windows apps with very limited freeware - 1/10
Overall 3.5/10

On a more serious note - if you want a computer then get a computer - I think the mistake is to compare an iPad to a laptop - it is not a laptop and it does not pretend to be a laptop. It is a browsing and media device.
It is slick, fast, very high quality graphics, great for many media based activities. It is a bit like criticising a PSP for not running a Powerpoint presentation.

precisely -- as I said keep it (where it belongs) in the bog for those long saturday morning dumps - like a very expensive magazine rack
its all about appropriate technology

Ah it is just like windows underneath. Delete and reinstall and I have pig noises again, as well as cat videos. Now I have truly seen the light and will queue for hours for Steve Jobs next turd.

So I noticed three just got the iPhone 4 so I went and got one. This feels like a small ipAd with a phone.
So far after using it for 15 mins there has been a crash and two errors of iTunes but the phone itself seems ok and is now downloading 4.01.
With the os it came with it loses 3 bars of signal just touching it where the two antennae meet. Gather I can get a freebie bumper to fix.

iTunes really is crap.
It cannot sync with the iPhone either with all sorts of errors (despite no media at all being in iTunes) on a PC that works brilliantly for everything else.
Like the iPad it then messed up the phone and wants to restore and update, thankfully I'd not done much with the phone first since it couldn't backup before it messed it up.

My PC is fine, I think my Apples have viruses
Have had more Apple crashes in the last few days than I have PC crashes all year. Hopefully when they work they'll be good though.
It seems to be in a funky update/restore/fail type loop.

It is on the syncing iPhone that it fails.
"The phone cannot be synced. The required file cannot be found." It is a newly activated iPhone with 4.01 update, a new install of iTunes with no media in it.
Then "a folder was specified instead of a file" and then it says my iPhone if 4GB with 2GB free LOL.
What can be so simple that it causes so much fail?

"iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPhone "My iPhone". Got to the Summary tab in iPhone preferences and click restore to restore this iphone to factory settings". And so the loop begins again.

"The iPhone software update server could not be contacted. An unknown error occurred (1621)."
More information takes you to a useless web pages that tells me to check for updates (says I'm on the current version) and all sorts of other useless help LOL.
I think they're trying to blame my laptop
instead of their crap buggy iTunes.

What you are experiencing is not normal, if it was Apple simply wouldn't sell the vast numbers they do. Either something is up with pc/install of itunes or you need to RTFM
