I think overpopulation causes lots of these issues and no amount of our money will change that. Aid only keeps this cycle going.

Nothing against that at all. I suspect they do have some good practice manuals. But one trouble with al these large multi-agencies is that they are so cumbersome and get bogged down in bureaucracy. Shouldn't happen but it does. And on top of that you get jobsworth/corrupt officials in countries who stop those wanting to help at the airport because they don't have the correct visas or whatever.

A bit like a larger version of child protection in the UK. We all know what's needed but the multi-agency coordination is pitiful. And will, as another example, the EC ever agree on anything with all countries involved?

Sad but true. But they should keep trying.

An irony in Pakistan is that the Taliban, and other groups, seemed to have got their act together and are helping out. Salt in the wound for some. dl

It's - 'their intellect' not 'there intellect', I'm guessing that by the continuing use of the word "boy" you're some type of rural farmhand? .... which would explain your slightly retarded views of the world, can I call you Dick.....

This is all getting a bit nasty!

I seem to recall this all started with a discussion on some unfortunate flood victims!

David I don't think you have anything to apologise for. Infact I think it's commendable you've kept posting in the face of some of the things said.

well thats what it is.

It’s not the 1st time and it will not be the last. Overpopulation leads to population/ urbanization of the flood plains which leads to Seasonal flood effecting the population . Are you trying to tell me you don’t think this region is overpopulated?

most / All Living species fight over land and position. Survival of the fittest does not involve the strong helping the week. I am not saying humans should act in this way however i just feel Aid must be spent in a sustainable way and not just thrown at people with no regard of the cause. Reduce the rate of population growth reduce the need for aid

Granted natural disasters will happen. However the flooding this year was way worse than it had ever been. The flooding we had in the UK in the past few years was worse than I can remember. It's not just overpopulation it's disasters occuring with much worse severity.

Good evening

It does bring us onto the emerging countries and their ever bigger appetite for consumer goods and also manufacturing.

Looking at China and India for example who are two of the biggest 'consumers' for want of a better word, huge coal fired power stations (as an example), more cars, fossil fuels, and more white goods, these all at the cost of the environment, I am not saying people are not entitled to them but it worsens the problem and likely will see more flooding, particularity to India and China and Pakistan of course.

Add the increase in population and land required to house them...

I do not have an answer but the problems are likely to get a lot worse...

Hi F1. Agreed that species fight over land (in effect). However, humans are not at any serious risk of extinction as a result of flooding (well, at least not yet) and what we are discussing here is how humans interact - whether one should assist the other. Whether you think they should or not is a matter of opinion, but it is not an evolutionary matter. True enough that if people live on a floodlplain they are more likley to die in floods - this has little to do with survival of the fittest though.

OK guys thanks for comments. I am not after a badge but I do find it depressing to read some of the comments on here. I don't think I take things too seriously either but the scale of this disaster is mind blowing.

Over population? Yeah I guess but it takes a braver man than me to ignore the plight of dieing kids wherever they are.

And you do mellow as you get older. 30 years ago I might have just put this down as some paki kids in trouble which had nothing to do with me. But not now. Perhaps having your own kids makes a difference. Perhaps it's just softening of the brain

And we are all f,ucking up this planet
