Shunty

Straight line performance is difficult to call due to completely different power delivery.

Porsche = Smooth, top end power.
Scooby = gutsy, more laggy delivery.

However, I would say:

0-60 - Scooby quicker
60-100 - Porsche a fair bit quicker
0-100 - Porsche slightly quicker overall
30-70 thru gears - Scooby quicker

100 - 0 - Porsche much quicker!

Stephen - It does not have PSM (although it does need it IMHO)

I agree that for a cash purchase you'd be better with something second hand. However, due to strong residuals, they make great company cars. Options were 330ci = £450 per month, Boxster S = £500 per month. The extra £50 is well worth it I reckon - our car park at work is full of 330's.

Veracocha - I remember watching driven I think & I am sure it gave the boxster s a big thumbs up for handling in the dry.

The problem is with these types of threads that obviously people who own boxster s's might take offence to some of the statements.
My line of inquiry was more to prove a point to the guy @ work that his £49k porsche waould not wipe the floor with my motor.
I think the boxster is a lovely looking car & is obviously fast, good handling (dry) etc etc.

His made other sweeping statements like they are far too common (scoobs) now this all relates to your budget & where you are in life. I mean a scoob to a guy in his early twenties might be a car he aims to get in 5 years time.
I spent £3k on a diamond ring from USA 2 years ago but I wouldn't down the guy who just got engaged to his girlfriend & bought a £300 ring.
I could have said to him that a boxster s is a poor mans 911 but I didn't, even though his isan ar*e. He never once asked me about the scoob...c'mon you know the type.

thanks to all for the input on this

Back in summer last year coming up from S'hampton up the A31 - dual carriageways I came up behind one of these. My car at the time UK MY99 with centre and rear exhaust but front dp still in place so reasonably standard. Boxter S gets held up behind mini in outside lane, me behind him, he looks in his mirror and sees whats behind. Mini pulls in - boxter boots it from about 50mph (uphill stretch) I was totally glued to him, inside lane now clear so he pulls in and I pull in front of him by a good 5/6 car lengths (by which time we were very naughty and in 3 figures but the road was pretty much deserted) by the time we have to slow into a 50, single carriageway.

Having totally put him in his place I slow right down and do 50 all the way through, and he's now sitting 1 foot off my bumper - not a happy chap judging by his facial expressions. 50 again increases to a national and dual carriageway, I boot it and again he can't keep up. This time I level off at 90 and he boots past at over 3 figures just so he could try and console himself.
Nice motors but they really ain't that quick next to a scoob from my experiences......

scoobyjawa -

now me personally if I get beat then I always aknowledge the other guy, flash lights or a wave etc.
Been trashed by a couple of bikes, but gave a chase for a laugh, they normally give a wave back when they let me catch up

had a go with a supra last week only upto mph...oohh did I forget to put the speed can't have been a turbo'd one I take it otherwise I would have been trashed. I took 1 length out of it but he was 2 up & I was on my own. Beutifull looking motor, he live near me as I have seen him before. I will ask him what it is next time I see him.
the pc-bible-bashing crew are gonna be calling me a boy racer soon

Dales,

I like to hear stories from owners who wish they had gone for the PSM!

I have just ordered a new 2.7 (with PSM) and even though there is clearly less power at the wheels, I expect that the PSM will be a great comfort, if not a a true 'Hyperspace' feature!

£50 extra a month for an S over a 330Ci. Hmmmn that'll be the leasing cost and not the tax bill then!

Cheers,
Stephen

Stephen

We have a personal lease option where we get £5k p.a. instead of a company car - therefore tax neutral regardless of choice of car. (You just get taxed on the £5k as though it is part of your salary)

scoobyjawa I doubt he was fully trying or his car fully run in if you started off behind him and pulled in 6/5 car lengths in front. Thats the kind of difference you'd expect between a scooby and a good hot hatch not a car that is arguably as quick as a scooby. Maybe it was a tarted up standard boxter and not the S.

This is surely adding napalm to the fire, but it was a standard Boxter, not an S!

The difference is that on a track the surface is ultra smooth (and the Porsche sports some seriously wide tyres). Throw in a few bumps and its brown trousers time in the Porsche on public roads.

They also did a lap time in the S3 which matched the P1, but we all know that a P1 would paste an S3 in nearly all situations!

I seem to remember them saying that the Porsche was perfectly balanced on the track and that it could be driven hard without seeming to understeer or oversteer. Which is why it did so well!

Nope it was a Boxter S Saxo dude and he was trying - the look on his face convinced me of that and then the tailgating in the speed limit after I'd gotten in front of him.

It was all badged up as an S and had the exhaust too, and was a year old so I would hope it was run in.

I was there so I know it happened but I've always been told my car was quick even as standard (233bhp) but like my MY99's they were all higher powered than stated.

scoobyjawa - he was obviously an ar*e if he tailgated you in a 30-40 zone, all good drivers know that you race when safe, then cool off until safe again...unwritten rule- unless you is a kn*b of course.

My thoughts exactly mate. Think he just got more wound up coz I wouldn't rise to him and stayed at 50 the whole way through the limit, then booted it away from him again at the de-restrict onto the dual carriageway!!!!

Isn't it a real achievement to be overtaken be someone and then sit a foot off their bumper when you actually get to a speed limit and built up area? lol!!

ps - simple way of finding out, start a thread asking how many car owners on here have rear wheel drive as there only car...I think you will be surprised I reckon 5-10% max.
you can't beat statistics though.

oh & ps - what rear wheel drive cars have you owned?
I notice you drive a front wheelspinner at the mo, why didn't you go for a real wheel spinner then out of curiosity seen as how you like them so much

Thumbs up

If I had that sort of money to spend on a car i would consider a Boxster, the performance is only part of it, for you Mr Shunty it seem's to be more, each to there own.
The scooby takes some big victors out on the road. Leaving more expenisve car in it's dust, this is not enough for me(I'm a bit bored of doing it now, the novelty has wore off).
I'm looking at the whole package and If I could swap my Scooby for a Boxster S I would in a second.

Would you?
ps.Don't get any work done stay on here and talk about cars

Regards
