You'll have to excuse the blurry ones, the lighting was poor and I was working freehand - left my tripod at home. Next time I'll spend a bit more time on some good quality shots

I used to run RRH (Formerly RAF) Staxton Wold - the former Chain Home radar site - and was fascinated by its history which dated back to about 386AD. I did a couple of talks to local residents on what we do now, and the sites history. WWII has always held a fascination for me.

When much younger 109's often visited airshows.............sounded like they were just about to break down !! Like on the telly when the engine dies followed by a whistling sound and then the sound of a plane crashing LOL
The others that did the rounds were Spanish 109's powered by Merlins (bouchons IIRC), over the years I seem to read quite a few have crashed on ??

STICKY THREAD RE HENDON/COSFORD TRIP IN EARLY OCTOBER 2010 NOW AT THE TOP OF NSR.
Please contribute to that one if possible and your preferences for dates and location. Would be good to 'do' both sites over the next few months

No probs Shaun
also -- while I am here
one for the bank holiday
http://www.littlegransdenshow.co.uk/aircraft.php
the P51D's are totally stunning -- and they really open the taps, low and loud
and you get within feet of them taxi-ing etc
very local to me (10 miles west of Cambridge - 10 miles north of Royston-- great little airshow (and classic car show too) lovely old wartime airfield - good food & beer too
unfortunalty I wont be attending this year (sailing on the Orwell) -- but really reccomend it

I seem to recall a saying from the distant past about Messerschmitts when referring to ladies of ill repute, something like " her knickers are like Messerschmitt 109's, they're always coming down"

Even that good old gooney bird of ours, the Hastings had a tailplane problem. One of them with a parachute course on board had a tailplane fail due to corrosion and all on the aircraft were lost, including a navigator who flew with me in the Canberra B(I)8 in Germany.
