We also offer built engines, full, & short, and often have built 2.1lt short engines in stock, ready to go.
The 2.1lt stroker kit market is very competitive, so the current kit prices are being kept low. Because of this, some companies really don't want to just sell the kit, but want to make the money up by doing the whole job.
People can choose who, & what suits them best.

bought a uk 2000 about 7mths ago with a 2.5 701 block runs ok but needs a remap as the ecu is pulling timing on the 2.5 block for safety , just on the look out now for a apexi ecu the jgm to remap it ,running standered heads and standered gearbox runs sweet as a nut and purrs.

Don't go down the 2.5 route, unless you have a spare 10k, or in my case 12k and you still wont be happy. Mark at lateral 2.1 kit is a very good option if you don't want to go mental.

I know a guy with v3 sti gearbox + ej257 thats been running for 5+ years. It now makes at least 500hp.
Personally the 2.1 is a good option for the type r with its short gearing

We offer engines in "kit" form, so that the customer has the choice of who builds it for them.

Mine include Forged internals, head gasket, 6 speed gearbox, brembo's allround, suspension, arb's allround, jdm xenons, new turbo, ap organic clutch, billet flywheel, apexi AVCR etc, etc, etc. And no i am still not happy. I think i will change the turbo for a MD123, and increase the injectors.
2.1 is the best road for you to go down Stef. Good luck.

Mine already had the Brembos, suspension package, xenon driving lights, and a LINK ecu, remapped by Bob Rawle.
What turbo are you using at present, and what are you specifically unhappy about?
Mine now pulls like a train from 2000 revs, and is driveable around town at 25mph in 5th.
When given some beans, the acceleration is neck cracking. What's to be unhappy about?
