I thought i'd be able to do more than 4 miles after a while but my legs (calf muscles) are knackered every night when I go to bed and ache as soon as I get up and take the dog straight out making them worse and so not getting used to it. I thought regular walking like that would become easier and you could go further after a while and not ache?
It should indeed be getting easier the more you walk.

Cheers. I've bought new trainers, some nike air plus things which are providing far more cushioning than the very old tatty things I was wearing. I think I may have caused a lot of it from walking too hard with knackered foot wear over rough ground and with having rather flat feet have impacted quite a lot on my calves.
The new trainers seem to be helping but because I have to walk the dog every day i'm not resting my calves to help them stop aching. Perhaps walking slower and ambling for a week or two may help.
Oh and yes I will try stretching, currently I get straight out of bed and take the dog out.

I find running very boring unless I am chasing after a ball, so I play five a side on Mondays instead of going for a jog.
Gentle weights and cross trainer in the house twice a week if I cba.
Swimming with the daughter on Sundays.
As I get older the more I find excercise tedious unless its something enjoyable like a bike ride or football mentioned above.

My regime used to be 5 a side twice a week and MMA 2 nights.
But now they've both stopped now with the little one on the way I can't risk injury and being off work for 6 weeks with a broken ankle

Have you got a spare £40? Because I can recommend you a nice pair of bib shorts which should relieve that problem. I expect to get sore down there so have a nice pair of good quality shorts. Also, it's the done thing not to wear any knickers under them

Get a decent small firm seat with no seems on the seat and buy a decent pair of cycling shorts/bibs with removable padded liner and u`ll be fine. Its like any thing you take up as a hobby if you have the right equipment its easy and stress free if you cut corners or just jump in head over heals you`ll pay for it and more than likely be put off for life.

I do 2 circuits, 1 with each dog, as walking them together is a simple lol
I dont work much as Ant kindly pointed out But I manage the walk in the morning regardless of daylight, in fact I tend to go out earlier in the winter as there are less people about.
Then come the evening, once the missus gets over we tend to take them both out together for a longer 3-3.5 mile route which again takes about an hour allowing for the other halfs short legs, and sniff stops. The route can be longer if and when I can convince her to walk further.
Shurrup ! You are only jealous. At least I work hard when I actually work

250+miles per week cycling
Compete in weekly 10, 25 or 50mile time trials during the 'season' (Mar-Sept)
Not sure if it's now more of an addiction rather than a hobby.

We've been trying some barefoot running on the track at my running club lately. It's amazing how the cushioning in modern trainers changes your running stance. After less than 20 metres I was up on the ***** of my feet to avoid the intense pain going up the back of my legs.
Whilst I must admit, it has been a bit of a bloody affair at times I'm now up to 400m before my feet are crying out for socks and trainers but my stance is much better
Caveat: DON'T try this at home kids

Gym 5 times a week, training with weights, have been going for 16 years solid, I only take breaks for illness & holiday. I used to do a lot of running, but now I only do about 10k a week.

I walk to the pub (approx 200 yards away) and also to the fridge for snacks, the cupboard for chocolate and the booze cupboard for JD, all a distance of roughly 20 feet. The walk to the car is the killer, I have to go down two flights of steps and walk about 60ft downhill. On the way back it's much tougher.
