I think with 3g being pretty much everywhere, it's a free way to keep in contact with people.
Personally, I use it as a way to keep in touch, and allow my family so see pics of the children.
Parents and sister in N Wales, me in the midlands, my brother is in Essex and another in Melbourne.

As they say, parents like being pictured with their children. Here is a real example from a colleague in the US!! (They have a public profile so anyone can see this!)
