IMHO - the Fat Duck is overrated, serving quite a lot of pretensious food, and people buy into it because it is fashionable to like it.

For a much better classic eatery in the south I would highly recommend;

Le Manoir - But ask them to seat you in the older part of the restaurant if eating in the evening or the conservatory if having lunch. Dont bother with the al a carte menu just go straight for the 9 course tasting menu

The Waterside Inn - lovely location and excellent food

Gidleigh Park - fantastic location (although quite a way from London), great food, again go straight for the tasting menu

If you want to be 'seen' then Gordon Ramsey/Claridge's or Maze are good.

Personally I would always stay over, means you can enjoy the wine and have relaxing meal before retiring. Only downside, you will burn around £1k at any of these places to do that. But if you like fantastic food then I think the places represent great value for money.

As a Maze regular I really think you have missed the mark as a place to be seen. You might get seen by me but I have never seen even a Z list celeb in there. If you want to be seen go to The Ivy.

Given your recommendations it may be more about style than quality. The Fat Duck is a sensational restaurant but modern and challenging; Manoir is much more traditional done well, as is Waterside and Gidleigh.

Fair enough, each to their own, but when I go out to eat I dont want to be 'challenged'.

And yes, style is important to me, I want the whole experience, including great food.

Trying new places is the best thing, make your own mind up. But for me, I have been to all of the restaurants I listed many times, except the Fat Duck, where I have only been once, and feel I have 'done it' and have no desire to try it again.

It is personal taste. If my wife was not so in love with Manoir I would never bother going back. It is well done but does not excite me at all.

Trout,
Have you to Maze since Atherton left? Interested to know if/how it's changed?
