I dont know how they do it, I can only iagine its like us climbing a normal ladder, how many fall off thought, one slip and thats it, and at 1700 feet you would have a fair few seconds to contemplate, about ten based on a calculator I found on the web.
I suppose its like the steel workers that built New York, unsecured walking along steel girders, now I know I can walk along a steel girder without falling off when its on the floor but when its 700 feet up I am sure I could do it as effectively as on the ground but everything about it just says dont, once you have overcome that its just walking on a girder, overcoming it is a different matter.
