Thanks Matt, I will check how he did it. Can you explain why it has to be done manually rather than 'electronically'?

Please get back to me soon as it is booked in for Wednesday

i'm going to double check the reason in the morning. BMW technical have us manually do this before we can do ANY repair work on the vanos units, as the solenoids them selves, plus the labour can be very a expensive job, and potentially embarracing if, after all of the labour costs we quote and the parts, we don't fix the fault.

From what i remember, the last pressure sensor is just below the oil pressure accumulator, this is BEFORE the potentially flawed line, rendering it's reading about as usefull as a c*ck flavoured lolly pop.

I think a c*co flavoured lolly pop would be quite useful tbh.

Matt, thanks.

I spoke to the garage today and he said they measured the pressure electronically and not manually. I mentioned that somebody had told me it should be done manually and he sounded surprised. This measurement he did was normal.

He said he did a diagnostic test on the solenoid valves (something to do with measuring current draw and how long they stay open) and all four failed.

I'm booked in for tomorrow and its going to cost me about £700 and am not sure what to do now

Don't stress indus! (i'm everywhere!!! hahaha)
I'd be inclined to ask him if he's 100% confident in his diagnosis on the oil pressure being ok.
Where he needs to measure the oil pressure is litterally before the lines go into, and feed, the vanos units the high pressure oil they need to function.
If he says yes, approve the work.
If he doesn't fix the fault with the solenoids.....do. not. pay.
I'm sure you may well have a pressure fault, hense the "rattling noise" you hear. Which is actually pulsations in the oil (caused by a leaking pipe maybe?!)
If he is using a bmw diagnostics system, the test modules he ran for your solenoids would have actually identified the solenoids as faulty and instructed him to replace them.

Bottom line mate, if you trust his diagnosis, and feel he'll sort it without carpet bombing your vanos system with ££££'s of parts.... Let the man work. Then see what he finds, he may well be an m-power god and teach me to suck eggs!!
Where you taking it to?
Please don't say it's a company called bmwise.

Thanks. I've dropped it in with him this morning so we'll see what happens!
