I can't stand the 9-5 grind either.

One reason I work in the oilfield.

I get paid better than most 9-5 jobs and get half the year off to do what I want.

I am concerned though for the people who think their lives would be boring without work, now they really need to find something to do!

Done plenty of travelling with work, seen most of the bits of the world I want to and we both think we need to take a break. Bottom line is we are going to buy in France (currently negotiating), stop work for a while to see how we cope and if we are committed sell the UK and stay there. If not then I will pop back as and when to keep my brain active and to watch all the numpties I currently see stuck in the same traffic jams every day on the A40 around Oxford whilst I ride past

If anybody's interested I'll let you know how we get on. 2011 will be an interesting year me thinks.
Yep let us know how you get on .Life is for living !! Go for it .Good Luck .!!!!

Keep us posted on your progress. I have sold my place in Marbella because it wasnt getting used & seeing as it was a big chunk of money sitting doing nothing i cashed in & got a buyer within weeks of putting it on the market. I'm kind of not working at the moment, could say in between projects although i have recently opened another pub but they run themselves once there up & running.
My point is that as long as you've got something to keep you occupied then you wont get bored. I just like staying active but then again i am only 30.
I'm justing awaiting on PP getting approved on building project for myself so that should keep me busy for the next 18 months.
Best of luck.

Where's you pub?

I've a little experience working in bars and they seem very hard to make money out of.

Both of them in Central Scotland. They wont make loads of money but ive turned around the first one quite easily & the new one i have opened has just had a major refit & attracts a wider audience as well as football fans during the week & at weekends. I spend 2 hours a day sorting them out & doing the usual banking & stock take. I know its not a game to make myself a fortune out of but i have other interests as well that keeps my head above water.

Not my cup of tea I'm afraid. I'd be bored rigid after a couple of months.

Have some kids, brings a whole new meaning to life.

Oilfield jobs are soul destroying though. Wasting your life away in the middle of the North Sea is not what life is about, nor is working 168hr fortnights in comparison to a 9-5's 75hrs Forget the I only work half the year, count up the hours of a 2&2 rota and you're working a hell of a lot more than someone on a typical 37.5hr week 9-5, infact count up the hours of a 2-3 rota and you're still working more hours than a typical onshore worker.

As someone that works in the industry myself and has had a fair few stints offshore, it's a horrible, horrible job. All you hear is , 12 days to chopper, 11 days to chopper, it's chopper eve, thank fu*k the chopper is now on its way. Every trip is the same, as soon as you go off, the timer is ticking down to when the chopper comes back to pick you up. It's boring, it's cold, there are some right ars*s about in such a small confined place, you are severely restricted, you miss out on family life and events back home, weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, christmases etc

I packed it in as the thought of another offshore trip made me near suicidal. I now work back onshore, earn £5k less than I did offshore which works out as peanuts after 41% tax and now work a 7 day on, 7 day off pattern, well actually it is 2-3-2, 2-3-2 with 10hr shifts.

If you're doing well in your field offshore, the aim is to get back onshore on similar money

Unfortunately money can't buy a personality for those that say they'd get bored.

If the resources are there you use that to do as much or as little 'work' as you like to help with the quieter moments you might 'struggle' with. Even if it is lending a hand to others, or helping married women through their lonely spells alone.

Working full-time in a job with numpties all around and having to commute with everyone else, day in day out sounds utterly mind numbing and soul destroying. I can't remember the last time I saw a traffic jam, thank ****.

That said, 15K per annum would mean the above doesn't apply but having the capability to increase that should you need to return to work does mean you should give plan A a go before it is too late.

Why wait until you are incontinent and repeat yourselves over and over again about when you were young.

NEVER be afraid to leave your own comfort zone.
Die with as few regrets as possible.

There is your answer.

On a practical note - rural France is lovely but can be very quite and very lonely.
Make sure you actualy want the quiet life. You can get very bored of a beautiful view

Well I'm a service hand so go to different rigs all the time. I have worked offshore UK and it is **** to be honest I agree; too many ******* and crews that have been together too long. I like the fact I move around. It is ok being on a job/rig for a few hitches but after some times things can get over familiar. Now I come and go to different rigs and I do a job where I don't have an immediate boss on site, just answer direct to the client.

I'd like to not do this crap but the money is decent and I need to buy a house. So for now I'll keep plugging away but I kind of face it with a stoic philosophy and try not to let the BS bother me, 'cos I know it doesn't matter.

Are you still oilfield, doing real-time support of something?
