Im sure the talk of the wifi only version is similar to that of the iPad at its launch, with the 3G versions following quickly.
As was said earlier I have hardly used the 3G on my iPad to date, but it IS handy to have it available.

Seeing all sorts of prices bouncing about at the moment, so curious to see what the pricing will actually be.

Looking at the video on Crackberry of it at the launch it looks pretty good to me. I am liking the size and look of it from the off, lets see what it can actually do.

a 7" tablet is not a phone. it's bigger than the current kindle and sony 6" ebook offerings.

if the 7" ipad is retina display, i reckon it will do as well as its big brother, especially with the laydees.

i use the 3g on my ipad quite a lot - it does go every where with me though.

Mine lives at home lol unless im bringing it to the office or a friends house for some reason. Not a portable device for me.

Playbook is actually jean pocket sized, but would be concerned having it hanging out the pocket all the same

I want one to play with NOW !!

The name Playbook will speed it's demise. RIM should have targeted the corporate market that they already have a grasp of, by using Play in the title it's already branded a toy. Unfortunately games on the Blackberry are dire, so they lose both ways.

Crackberry has gone mad with talk about this already, sounds like there will be a similar uptake for the playbook as there was for the iPad, with people getting one without quite knowing why they want one lol.
Blind faith in a product without question, whoever would have thought!

Sounds like it will not reach the shelves till early 2011 though which is a shame.
At this point, with what know of it, I want one, and know a fair few others who do too.
Just want to get a phone running 6.0 to see what sort of thing to expect from the playbook, even though it will be a different OS.

6 has a completely new UI for touch devices, unlike what I currently use on the 9700.
While the playbook will not be running 6, they will be similar in feel and operation, with the playbook having more function etc.
So, I am looking forwards to using a device with 6.0 loaded on it, to get an idea of what the playbook OS will be like to use.

Just doing the usual on this subject... being right.

Snazy will waste more money on one and just like his android phone it'll end up in a draw.

If the Playbook is as successful as the iPad after six months on the market I'll close my account on Scoobynet.

Looks good to me, fingers crossed they can keep it sub £350 for the wifi version.

Not really sure what I would need one for, I have two laptops a netbook and a BB smartphone, but I'll probably get one anyway.

Playbook?!! How does a firm like Blackberry end up releasing something with the name "playbook"?!! I guess its better than calling it 'black book' or 'black spade' or something, but a pretty dumb name which wont help sales IMO!

Lol same ere, 2 smart(ish) phones, an iPad, a netbook, a media tv and a pc, but always room for one more

Fingers crossed on the pricing too. Will be watching the forums and sites closely.

Tis indeed a pretty stupid name, but the same was said about the iPad too I guess. At the end of the day if people like the product the name will become irrelevant, if the product bombs, it will be "doomed from the start".

Either way I'm sure there will be lovers and haters along the way.

Why wouldnt they want to broaden their appeal with this name

- their phones do what phones are supposed to do ! with a modicum of other diversifacation

This thing does the rest !

I guess they have got away with naming their handsets after a piece of fruit for long enough lol.
Like I say, I wanna see actually operations before I know if i want one for sure.
Very interesting too and fast from concept to nearing production.

Can see this taking off with the younger generation - I work in a college and have seen a major swing towards Blackberrys (they appear "cool"). There seems to be a fair bit of anti-Apple out there in student world.

I'm intrigued to see what it's like - no doubt with a new name, price etc....

Time will tell

If it works half as good as it looks I will be happy lol.

Don't hold your breath. It's nothing but vapourware right now.

Fully agree with the Students rebelling against Apple. My nephew - 16 - thinks iPhones and iPads are "Too Cool" the heathen.

Well, we've officially announced that we are going to be the pre-loaded book reader on the playbook, so one would like to think we'll get some production hardware at some point, and when we do I'll have a little play, perhaps do a quick comparison between iPad and PlayBook.

Before anyone asks, no, I've not had anything to do with our interaction with the device, I'm iOS only. I do know the team who are working on it, but they are still very strict NDA's in place in regards to it so there isn't any discussion about it.

I've not really read / watched the press announcement, but it doesn't feel like a business device to me, and that's what BB is known for, and this could be a very big downfall for them. Fanboyism aside, Apple has created a bit of a niche with the iPad and every new device that is similar will be compared to it, and they will need to be very good to match or beat the iPad and I really am not convinced the Playbook can do it. It would be nice to see some proper competition for the iPad, it'll force Apple to be even more inventive.

I think the iPad could become like a bluetooth headset or a Lexus.

...the user of it is a bit of a tw@t.

Probably because most students can't afford Apple stuff!

As for the name, it's an American thing. American football and stuff use "Playbooks" as a planning and strategy thing, probably sounds great to the yanks.

To be fair the press releases dont really tell you much right now, nothing overly helpful anyway, so its early days to tell whats what.

Very fair point about the niche market created by the launch of the iPad, and once again, like the iPhone its the one to follow.
And FOLLOW is an important word here. I think copy is too strong a word, and gets used far too much.
Personally I would like to think that while they are competing in the same market, they are offering different devices, with different function, that way we avoid the "copy" tag.

I agree again with the point that RIM has for a long time focused on the business end of the market, but think it is fair to say that recent handsets, and changes in advertising clearly state their intended market for the future. Blackberry has become a social tool now, not just a business end tool, and dare I say, it has done a very impressive job of changing its market in a small space of time.

lol thats exactly what I thought about the name too
Still not sure its a great name, but sparks conversation, so makes it become a well known name quickly, be it for the right or wrong reasons
