What he says - DB - you have to take action.

You comment on it being a 'long story' is just that - a story. There is no 'story' that should get in the way of doing the right thing. A life is at stake here - certainly a quality of life for a nine year old child. As others have said this is a form of child abuse.

+2 DB's - Good stuff on raising here (and refreshing to see that it's being taken seriously), that's awful for you young lad as socialising at a young age is key to the development of inter-personal skills as well as training the brain to absorb information.

Don't envy you much on having to do this, but maximum respect for doing it

Seems that the LA may not even know about your nephew if he never went to school form the start, so inspecting the quality of home schooling may not have ever been carried out.
The PR plus stories in papers suggest that some kids are kept at home to be companions to keep the parents happy, rather than improve the child's learning.

Sounds like he needs rescuing from his mother and she may need some sort of assessment.
Is there a father at home?

Has you sister any specific qualifications for teaching him at home.

I find this difficult to believe, surely she must realise the harm that is being done to thiis poor lad.

I think you have to do something to change his situation. He is being seriously harmed by such treatment and if you don't do something positive he will never recover properly during his lifetime.

I wouldn't worry if she finds out, you ate only doing what's best for her son.

I hope it gets sorted as soon as possible.

Does he seem 'normal' (for want of a better word) with regards to his level of competance?

Being honest we hardly get to see him,i would say he is very normal, apart from not being able to read and write properly.A few have asked if he has a father a home, yes he does.So i suppose he's just as bad.

Well given that he cannot read and write at his age, I would get the ball rolling ASAP!

Too late someone's beaten me to it ..... and for the record "yes", the irony of spelling like Stephen Hawking with hiccups during a lightning storm really does matter, especially on a thread about education and someone's ability to "spell".... (we can all add = )

Yes it may seem ironic, that I have just posted on another thread his SN is a refreshing forum.
I have not had my bad spelling picked up on here for a while. Maybe I am more aware now, and take care (which is difficult on an I phone).
Thanks for making me feel like crud DCI.

For your information I am 27, just so that you know.
My mother was a teacher (more irony).

Please be my friend.

I find this so hard to read!!

I have a 9 year old boy and the thought of your poor nephew missing out on everything my son has had the pleasure of doing and learning is so sad.
Am afraid you have GOT TO BE CRUEL TO BE KIND!!
You must make this your priority to put this right asap.
Even if it causes a family rift, time is a great healer. I also think your sister and her partner have further problems that you just cant talk about.

BE A GREAT UNCLE AND DO THE CORRECT THING FOR YOUR NEPHEW

This is rather upsetting, looking at it in context, if the mother was a bone idle chav or money sponging benefit cheat then the better option would be to have the kid out of the way whilst they get stoned/pissed or spend taxpayers money on god knows what.
As she doesnt and spends all day with this child then there are psychological questions to ask.

My cousins daughter was home schooled and ended up socially inept, mainly because of the fact she was left to listen to music all day rather then learn anything. When she turned 18 she refused to go to the job centre without her Mum so they stopped her job seekers allowance. She was assessed and found to have psychological problems and is now in the process of being registered disabled.
Surely the authorities have a duty to see if these so called home schooled children are being educated properly.

I think that unless there is an overwhelming physical need for it, home schooling should not be allowed at all. Education is only a part of the school experience, its also massively about socialising, dealing with others, learning how to make friends, learning how to spot and deal with bullies and so many other facets of life that the majority of us take for granted.

To the O.P, I would suggest sitting your sister down one to one and explaining very clearly the harm she is doing. My nephew is just about to turn 6 and is well on the road to being able to read and write fairly well. if this kid is not at that stage by nine years old, what sort of education does she think she is giving? and how does she plan on preparing the child for higher education, exams etc? or does she plan on keeping him indoors throught his teenage years too?
IMO this is only a few steps up from Joseph Fritzl keeping his daughter locked in the basement all her life.

I'd ban home schooling.

If all kids were home schooled it would equal the end of democracy and a civil society. School is there not just to teach you to pass exams but to socialise kids, ergo perpetuate democracy...John Dewey etc.

Same goes for religious schools IMHO.

DB - is there any update on this. I was at my local pre-school last week and there is an information pack about the definitions of child abuse.

Apart from all the usual stuff one of the things that was listed is not fulfilling your child's educational needs. It is clear cut.

Someone needs to nip this in the bud real quick and surely others in the family will back you up on doing something about it.The lad has got no confidence and not having any friends or being able to read etc must be awful, hope something is sorted out for him..

I think we are all concerned for the lad. He is losing out very badly unless it can be sorted out very quickly, regardless of what his mother thinks!
