A gym is a waste of money imo, just go on runs on a frequent basis, or cycle when u can, the gut will fall off in no time.

This is interesting.

I have a quick story.

I was a regular at the Gym, I went from 15 stone to 14 stone in a short period of time without much of a change to my diet, ok, I did have a personal trainer for this period of time which of course helped me.

However, during a tread mill session I found myself running short of breath, yes I was a smoker, between 30 to 40 cigs a day in fact.

I came off the tread mill and could not catch my breath for a good 10 minutes, it worried me so I decided to quite smoking as soon as my current pack had finished.

Well, I managed to quit smoking, 4 months on and I am still not smoking, not even had a puff of a cig, the cravings are still very intense sometimes though.

But the problem is this. During that 4 month period I have managed to put on 2 stone!

I now weigh 16 stones, but I am 6' 2" so I can hide the weight pretty well so not many people have noticed the weight gain, luckily.

Not only this but since giving up smoking I have lost all my motivation to go back to the gym!

I do sometimes wish that I never gave up. Although I feel much healthier now than when I was smoking, even though I am 2 stone heavier.

I just need to find the motivation to get back in the gym and I know that the weight will fall off in no time.

Like has been previously mentioned, motivation is the key to losing and keeping the weight down.

What ever way you decide to do it, good luck.

I've recently started to hit the gym hard again after a 3 year break (3 years ago i was 11.5 stone, in extremly good shape, felt alive!).
Three years on and I was 14 stone, and 6ft tall, my body shape hid the fat well.
The problem was, that i was extremly unfit, and very tired all the time.
All of this, with an impending wedding on the way. (11/11/11) has motivated me to get back into shape.
I have set myself little rules, which has helped me masively.
Firstly, i work my nuts off at the gym, BUT ONLY FOR 1 HOUR MAX.
second, I sill eat pretty well, i just monitor what type of foods i eat.
i.e instead of eating take aways when i'm working late/too tired to cook. I force myself to knock up something light and healthy....so... chicken tikka, is relaced by chicken breast (diced and pan fried) nice mix of greens (quick zap of peas, corn, broccolli in a bowl of water in the microwave) and importantly (plus previously mentioned) no coca cola, pepsi, sprite, tango blah blah. Just boring water (little splash, and i mean little, of cordial)
Third place, i let my body rest on the weekends, keeping an eye on the food intake, but no gym. Let your body recover from the beating you are going to give it!

So far after one month..... i have lost half a stone, dropped 1 inch on my waist, increased my chest size by 1 inch, biceps by half an inch, thighs by 1 inch, my face looks less puffy, and generally i have so so much more energy!

You have to persist mate, it will pay off in the end.
Another good tip is to take a pic of you in a new pair of boxers, in i specific place, at a specific distance, and with the house lights on.
Then after three months, take another in the same conditions. You should see a massive difference!

here's what I've been doing this last month.

nothing for breakfast, salad (no dressing) and tinned makerel (i like the stuff with tomato sauce) for lunch and a can of slimline soup for dinner. If you get hungry during the day just drink water, it has no calories at all and it fills you up.

The protein in the mackerel is the essential part, otherwise your body just eats its muscle rather than the fat. This way your body is getting the protein it needs (cos your exercising) yet you still loose weight. If you don't like mackerel, then try tuna or chicken breast.

It's hell on earth for the first few days until your stomach shrinks and then it gets easier. i kept a lid on it by repeating 'nothing tastes as good as being thin feels'

For exercise, I just walked one hour a day after work, covering 4 miles or so in that time. That was 3 weeks ago so I have started running now I am physically fitter from the walking. Its made running a lot easier.

Another piece of advice is to drink green tea, lots of it! It's full of antioxidants and is really good for you, but the best bit is, if you drink a strong cup 20 minutes before running, you'll burn 17% more fan than if you ran without it. You can also run harder and longer. This evening, I ran 2.2 miles in 23 minutes, the longest I've ever run, the only reason I stopped was because I got back to my house!

Best of all, you're allowed a treat day where for one day a week, all bets are off. Eat what you like, drink what you like(Sunday was handy for this ), the sudden influx of food boosts your metabolism and stops your body going into starvation mode and hanging onto everything it can, plus it means you're allowed a social life, or at the very least that takeaway!

Like I said, I've been doing this for the past month and sticking to it religiously. So far I have lost over a stone and a half. I am aiming for 12 stone and have 5 lbs more to lose before I achieve this. I am 6'2"

Hope this helps,
astraboy.

Well done mate.
Went to see some family i haven't seen for about half a year, and they all commented on how much weight i lost, and that i looked alot healthier.
You might not notice the difference too much but it's those little compliments that make it worth while!!

Take it easy for one!

Went to the gym for the first time in ages back in April 2009 - although had been doing a few free weights at home - then tore ab muscle and fcuked shoulder. Neither have fully healed although shoulder got some complications and further injuries. Ab is 80% better though.

Take up cycling if you want to lose weight and ride to and from work and ride at the weekend.

When I was into cycling - before I hurt my back - I was riding maybe 15 hours a week and was eating a TON and was still lean with no fat hardly.

Felt absolutely great also and slept perfectly.

I wasn't drinking at all though so no calories that way.

Sometimes I'd eat like a whole ginger cake or something like a whole pack of digestives after my main meal. Awesome. Then would eat loads of food on the weekend rides (100 mile cruise takes maybe 6 hours or more, so time to eat quite a lot ), such as jelly beans, flap jacks, energy bars etc.
