Sim only deals aren't PAYG though if that is what you are implying. They are usually 30 or 365 day contracts. Again another plus rather than being stuck in a contract for 18 or 24 months.

tmobile are still doing 12 month contracts but you get a little less than what people who are on 18months get. If your happy with 02 swap to sim only and just pick up older phones which will be dirt cheap as once a phone is about 6months old it drops in value loads

The key is to talk to providers for the best deal and ignore the advertised deals.

so it's either talk to retentions at O2 and see if i can get a 18month contract for £20pm a min 200mins calls, min 500tx and i'd like 500mb data.

possible?

or I get a Sim card and use it in my phone for a few months, then buy a cardless phone that can use the sim deal?

Tesco Mobile SIM
£10pm (1month contract)
500mins Plus.. unlimited Text&Data.

I take it I just need my PAC code so I can move my phone number to the new tesco SIM, then use it in the phone I have now?
do I need to get my phone 'unlocked'?

rang O2 for my pack code, didn't even try and get a better deal for me to match anyone else.
so am going to go for the tesco £10 sim deal (500mins unlimited text & data) 1month contract.

just watching for the pac code to be texted to me.

I'm gonna get me a tesco sim for my 3GS. With O2 I'm paying £10 a month just for 'unlimited' data and 300 texts!
Going to unlock the phone first though

you might not need to unlock as the TESCO sims are with O2 anyway, if you are with o2 now, your phone will still work?

I was thinking along the lines that if I leave O2 for tesco then tesco to someone else I'd be stuck with a locked phone?
Anyways, done it now. Paid the £15, got a text telling me to put a non O2 sim in the phone and sync it with iTunes. Put the wife's vodafone sim in, synced with iTunes and nothing, doesn't accept it's on a new network...

edit.. tried it a few more times and it's now worked

£15, were you on PAYG? Unlock is free on Contract. Doubles the second hand value of your phone.

I pay £20 a month (PAYG 1 month contract) for 300 mins, 24,000 txts ans 1GB of data, when they say ulimited they actually mean the text and data I've quoted (O2)

I thought it was a good deal but seems Tesco are better

getting a phone unlocked at a phone shop is about £10.

popped into big TESCO 'Home' last night and asked the guy in there about the Tesco Mobile PAYG phones... seems that you can buy one and put a TESCO Sim staright in it.
Thats good as some nice phones on tesco mobile PAYG are only £80.

£10 sim with 500mins unlimited text & data is going to save me £15pm by not being on the 24month contract... £15pm will soon mount up for me to buy a phone. when it breaks i can buy a new one
