What...? The term 'flog'?
It's a slang term for 'to sell'.
I have no interest in flogging of the other kind.

No one needs to buy a £2k watch.
Agree you could buy a £100 Casio and have the warranty of a high end watch - just like a dirt cheap car that comes with a 3 year warranty or a Mercedes S-class comes with a 3 year warranty. Both will get you to work, but if you can afford the Merc you'd likely choose that.

There's a number of reason why you'd buy an original and not a fake. For a start the real one will be vastly superior quality. The fake is made with maximum profit/minimum cost in mind. The real one has a reputation of quality to live up to. You pay £200 for a 'good' fake and if it breaks that money is all gone. The original is likely to have a 3 year warranty, and be far less likely to go wrong as you are payng for a very high quality item.
Secondly you can almost always spot a fake if you know a bit about watches. The attention to detail is always much greater - it's like looking at something in HD compared to normal quality. IMO one of the easiest ways to tell if its fake tho is by the kind of person wearing it in first place. If you're trying to impress and you get clocked that you're wearing a fake then you look like a bit of a cheap-skate.
Real quality watches such as Rolex, Omega, Breitling, Tag etc hold their value very well - so although you're paying £2k, it's likley you can enjoy owning a luxury item, and still get £1500 for it in a few years time if you need to.
Nice watches are obviously seen as a bit of a status symbol, but its also nice to own something which has been manufactured with such attention to detail, and has a history behind it.

Not saying there is anything wrong with that but it's kool aid ultimately.

Yes agree to an extent - you are buying the image, but in the capitalist World image and status is important to a lot of people (including those who would claim otherwise - probably because they don't have the financial means).

It's called CLASS
Some have it - some desire it - some try to fake it
Numberplates which have to be messed about with is an example of misplaced snobbery .... us real posh people don't have to fiddle with our numberplates.
In the same way that we will always have real ....

I just don't get the whole watch thing.
It's a piece of metal that you wear on your arm and it tells you the time.
You can get this piece of equipment for £200 and get a pretty decent watch, it will tell you the time and if looked after, last many years.
It does what it does. It tells the time.
Women don't walk around examining diamonds to see if they are really QZ.
BUT if you have £2000+ just burning a hole in your pocket, why not?

Speak for yourself Pete. I don't work so to me it is a lot of money. But if £2000 was a weeks pay for me (WTF job pays £2000 a week??!) I would probably think of something more exciting to buy than a watch.

Don't get me wrong, I like the finer things in life, but more so because they make me feel good, not look good.
I could go to work, and have a watch or a new ring, but I choose to stay at home, and do the whole stay at home mum thing instead.

I'm not missing the point. Who is ever going to know it is worth £2k apart from you? Unless you're the kind of person who goes down the pub showing it to everyone! You can buy an identical looking one (if it is the kind of style you like) for a lot less and earn more money on the interest in a savings account. I understand that people like to buy expensive watches, but in a watch surely your requirments are tell the time, look good and last a long time? I never said people shouldn't buy them.

Of course you can get greater reliability out of more expensive items at times, but I buy for purpose, not for show and working on a budhet, I'm happy to accept my goods might not be the best in the world but they all do the job well enough, generally. I am wearing a £20 watch at the moment and it tells the time well enough for me to get by. The only fault is it has tarnished a bit, so it will be going back and getting swapped.
If you have the money and are willing to part with so much of it for something like a watch, fine. I just don't see the point.

That goes for alot of things in life, (for some) whether it be watches, cars, TVs, phones the list goes on. Some people just concern themselves with what looks the best/is the most expensive/is the latest new thing.

Some people like quality watches for the craftsmanship, elegance, intrinsic value and that they make a rather good heirloom. Not all things that attract a premium are vulgar.
