A 2 grand watch is probably worth more than pslewis' diesel hatch.

You don't by watches like that then drive a poverty spec utilitarian vehicle.

It's a laugh a minute from him.

Depends on how easily pleased you are. A good (expensive) watch would most likely keep the time better. I'm sure that gives many people happiness.

I put watches in the same category as antiques and fine art. One can take pleasure from the piece's aesthetics and enjoy it as a product of human endeavour, creativity and skill. They also appreciate.

Enjoying art or owning it?

There are plenty of rich philistines who get off on owning expensive art, but do they appreciate it?

Art isn't aesthetics BTW.

I work with a guy who can get amazing replicas of certain rolex, breitling and omega watches, mend and ladies, for £100 each and on the wrist they are very difficult to tell, but with a side-by-side comparison with my gen seamaster there are very small flaws in his replica seamaster. I would say that unless you owned one or had one in your hand you would be very hard pressed to tell the difference!

Also, he's had some of them for well over a year without issue and yet a Gen Tag that I bought less than a year ago spent 3 months out of my possession with a broken crown after I paid £1695 for it so reliability is a lottery really!

To me,however, the biggest giveaway is the person wearing the watch. I earn enough money that I can afford a watch between £900 and £2000 once per year due to a bonus that I get. I see this as my xmas treat! I cannot, however, afford a £9000 Rolex Daytona

(continued)

So if I see someone I know or am vaguely acquainted to wearing a rolex or omega or whatever, it would be easy to see if it was gen or not without a close inspection because their lifestyle/clothing/attitude would give it away far quicker!

Let's be honest, if you live in a council house and drive a £2000 classic impreza you are unlikely to be able to afford a rolex SERVICE never mind the watch!

Anyone who understand class would know that you don't get it by purchasing a £2000 watch.

It's possible to tell so much about a person that sports fake kit. It's aspiration without the means or the appreciation. Superficial, degrading and properly base.

It is simply one part of the ensemble .....

If you cannot spell properly, for example, the whole falls flat on its face ..... if you have a dump valve then it is quite clear that you will be wearing a fake classy watch when you emerge from the drivers seat in your Primark TrackSuit

Most people misunderstand the fake versus real argument ... they think a fake is worth it if it fools others into thinking its real. That's what I mean by a lack of class ......

Real class would not worry what others thought, the mere fact that they know they are wearing an inferior product is enough to make them uncomforable ....

My Casio tied to the Rugby time signal keeps perfect time and automatically does the changeover. It looks good enough and is easy to read, all for a very reasonable price.

I should learn how to phrase a sentence first , Im still trying to make out your first one.

Just how ridiculous are you to pick up on peoples spelling , are you really trying to imply people with 'class' have better spelling

I agree with you Pete on the issue of fake watches.

Owning a real Rolex is totally different to owning a replica.

When you wear it, no doubt you remember how you worked hard to get it, or how long it took you to save for it (or not if that's the case).

Wearing a watch such as a rolex, is not JUST a status symbol, to some people it is an example of their existsnce, it makes them feel good.

If I were in the position to pay so much for a watch, I would hope I had non material things that also made me feel as good.
