I've never met a diamond I didn't like but I'd rather spend my money on experiences than objects.

My current choice is to save anything I can to take the children to Disney Land.
This will take a long time if I were to use ONLY the money that the direct debit deposits.
I could possibly use the money to buy myself some nice things, but I know that their faces when they get to Disney Land will be worth 1000 watches.
The smile that I get from them is something money cannot buy.

I could afford a £2k watch and would love one. However, everyday I play football or go to the gym at work and as we have no lockers I'd be terrified of getting it pinched. I couldn't really wear it for the gym as I'd look like a ***** in my muscle vest with a big watch on my skinny wrist

I certainly could not be bothered to spend that sort of cash on a watch to wave around and to try to impress others with.
All I need is something reliable to tell me the time without it needing to look garish in any way.
Most of the Rolex's I have seen look very ordinary anyway.

I have not once seen/or heard them show off or bring attention to it.
I wouldn't dream of saying look at my necklace it's made from 'enter full description here' and proceed to flash it about. As I wouldn't post random threads about other random bits of jewelry I like the look of, but possibly would never own.

My father in laws Rolex is pretty ordinary, as is my friends Breitling. They have them for reasons other than showing off.

It's only about ostention to the nouveau riche and this market is well catered for. It is perfectly possible to enjoy owning a quality, understated elegant timepiece for ones own quiet pleasure.

I agree with you Pete on the issue of fake watches.
Owning a real Rolex is totally different to owning a replica.
When you wear it, no doubt you remember how you worked hard to get it, or how long it took you to save for it (or not if that's the case).
Wearing a watch such as a rolex, is not JUST a status symbol, to some people it is an example of their existsnce, it makes them feel good.
If I were in the position to pay so much for a watch, I would hope I had non material things that also made me feel as good.

Would that be 'totally different' to owning a replica?

I like watches, and have a couple expensive ones.
I was browsing the Breitling collection at my local jewelers on Sunday. They have a Brand new Breitling for Bentley watch in. A smidge under £7k.
Can't justify that much at the moment, but I do intend to buy another nice watch maybe next year (See what work we have in to estimate Bonus payments) and will probably be another Breitling (Have a Navitimer World), though BRM watches are damn fine.

I like it when people say, "You have loads of money ... why do you have an old X and a tatty Y and you should buy Z to help use up your money"
They completely miss the fact that because you have money doesn't mean you must spend it![Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)](images/smilies/rolleyes.gif)
A mere £2000 for a timepiece of some quality is nothing, if thats what you want. And, for most people it has nothing to do with showing off with it ...... it generally follows that those who wish to show off buy fakes - it fits in with their fake lifestyle.
Class attracts class ... and class will never be understood by those without any.

The fact of the matter, I only ever have jewelry repaired at one shop in Birmingham. The only other place I have bought jewelry from for someone other than myself is from T.A Henn in town. I doubt either shop would or has ever sold replica watches.

Imagine the smiles of your children reflected in the glass bezel of your Rolex as they look at the postcards of DisneyLand which you are showing them?

'If' (as this is hypothetical) I bought a replica for the price of a real one and found out, I would go back to the shop and stuff it up the **** end of the person who sold it me. If I didn't know it was a replica, then I wouldn't know. Simple as that.

Would the 'experience' be any different?

A Watch can be expensive.
Children are expensive.
A Watch should be reliable
A Child is never reliable.
Most Watches are nice to look at.
Most children are not.
If you get bored of a watch, you can sell it.
Selling a child is illegal.
I'll have an expensive watch anyday.
