No. The feeling follows the knowledge: Knowledge of the craftmanship, engineering, materials and heritage inherent within the piece. The sum, of course, is more than the parts. It's analogous to being in possesion of a Morgan motorcar; the method of production, the classic aesthetics and the evocative lineage of the marque motivates the aspirant - the desire to be in the prescence of, and interacting with, an object borne of excellence. This knowledge, coupled with the kinesthetic experience, engenders the feeling of pleasure. Subjective at first glance, objective when regarded critically. Plus, you're more likely to pull.

So how do you not get that feeling if you wrongly think it is a genuine Rolex?

Don't think cars are a good comparison for this thread.Thought the landred gentry have a beat up Volvo estate or Laand Rover....the not so classy 'Lords' have a new roller or the like.

Anyway!...watches....I just love them, have no interest in 'showing them off'.I know I have a quality item.

Sure, there are some crass expensive ones...I like the Christpher Ward company(haven't got one of theirs) who reckon they could sell a proper swiss watch for a fraction of what v expensive swiss watches cost...simply by cutting out adverts , celebrity association etc

I think they do some really nice ones from £200 rather than £2000 .V tempted by their aviator ones £275 rather than £8000 for an IWC one!!!! (at the moment I have an Omega and a couple of longines...not brash, just v nice!)

If you didn't know it was a fake, maybe not. But I wouldn't know.

I don't wear a watch. I used to many years ago. A massive fossil one with a thick leather band. I wouldn't know if it was good at keeping the time. It was just to cover my scars.

Most Watches are nice to look at.
Most children are not.

If you get bored of a watch, you can sell it.
Selling a child is illegal.

I'll have an expensive watch anyday.
To me, life without kids would be just so boring.

I agree, but I think that people who don't have children just don't understand what it's like.

There was a time where fast cars, drugs and alcohol were all that I wanted! Now I have two children all that just isn't important.

I suppose you either do or do not want children. I suppose there are also some people are single and have been for a long time, who convince themselves that's a part of life they don't want. When in reality they simply don't have the choice.

First, the aspirant with the motives I described would be, by definition, an unlikely mark and second, the odds of this hypothetical event occuring are so remote as to render the point petty. You're discussing the merits and validity of pleasure relative to its foundation and in the context of this debate () it's vacuous sophistry. If a man was blissfully married and didn't know his 'missus' was a Thai special.....etc. etc.

If you read my post it says nothing about my personal opinion. It says 'I understand' and 'I suppose' several times.

If you do not want children it's as simple as that. My sister doesn't. It just does not interest her. I understand completely what you are getting at DCI. People assume that she can't have children, and when she says she could, but she doesn't want to they assume she is gay!

Don't get me wrong here.

Hello Chip, I'm back running Wales now and the prospect of actually selling the bloody things seems some way off. Retail's been kind to me but my eyes are wandering.

back on track WATCHES or should i say things that are to expensive to wear for fear of losing or being robbed for it , i have a ring thats worth 3times what the ops watch cost but dont wear it for fear of losing as it couldnt be replaced unless you could go back in time to the gold rush days pan the gold yourself and then buy a large diamond and have one made so the passing it on through the family thing is a bit pointless if the relative is to scared to wear it in todays current times . so therefore when he passes on said watch will it be safe to wear or will it just end up in a safety deposit box like my family heirloom, i cant sell it as i promised me mum i would pass it on to my oldest , i just think its so crass wearing expensive jewelery unless of course you have the clothes and car to match , ie bloody expensive , i just think wearing a expensive piece with normal gear is pointless you mighy just as well strap a 2grand wad to your wrist and then cover it over with your m+s suit sleeve

The odds of an asteroid striking Earth and wiping us out in the next 24 hours are remote, the chances of someone, somewhere getting ripped off with a fake Rolex not so much.

Besides, humor me?

That seems a real shame tbh because if you can't use it (wear it) you should just sell it and make good use of the money for yourself and your family. It's only gonna be the same for your eldest, ie won't be able to wear it due to fear of loss/theft etc! Plus you have to pay for safety deposit box.

Have you looked into insurance to enable you to wear said ring? You can get good cover on your house insurance for special items, including cover outside the house???

A fool and his money are soon parted as they say, but anyone shelling out over one large would hopefully be wise enough to research what they are buying, and where they are buying it from.
