I don't suppose there is the teeniest chance that someone could actually answer my original question which was "Is there any chance a spider could crawl into the back of a computer or similar and cause damage e.g. by shorting something out?"

I am talking about British spiders as I will try and keep foreign invaders out

I am sure it could be possible DL. Most of the power supplies are lower voltage though so I think you would be unlucky if it did, as would the spider be!

What the hell did I look at this thread for :shudder:

I doubt they can do any harm David. We had a clear out last year and threw out a couple of old computers. Other half pulled one of the towers to bits, just to have a snoop and we found 3 dead spiders in there.

I used to let them go, but to be honest they seem to have gotten much bigger (maybe these are males? - or really old ones ) and I don't particulary want to pick it up

So I squish them

Female spiders are often 50% bigger than the male.
And quite a lot eat the male after mating.

I always thought that the big ones you see (which are usually trapped in the sink) were the males and they usually fall whilst looking for females?

I can assure you that no one was inclined to mess with either one, The spider was plenty big enough to have a good munch at your face.!
