For F**** sake make a decision one way or the other and be done with it.
Your car do as you wish.
You have had excellent advice to no avail so get something done and then this long winded now boring saga can draw to a timely close.

remember those guys "Jap Auto's" in birmingham that everyone is saying has a bad rep , Well they have called me today and said that all i would need to pay is £100 deposit then until i was happy with how it was performing i wouldnt need to pay the rest , Thats for a full recon engine , fitted at £1600 or supplied for £1295.

Im still warey of this and had 90% decided i was going to just buy a second hand bottom end with oil pump ect or get an STI engine and use what i needed , but it does seem a good offer......

thanks guys to all those who have helped ,

Im going to do it properly and replace all the oil pump, modline ect , Both options below include oil pump , Modline sump ect

Is there any advantage fitting the bottom end ect from an STI engine rather than fitting the semi forged wrx bottom end with the forged pistons , Bearing in mind the WRX bits are £900 delivered and the STI £1200 + post. Otherwise i think i may be best just getting the WRX one...

i am at a loss to see why you wont use api...why cut corners and go with any of these other companies or risk a breakers engine? yes, something else might be found if api strip it, but equally they might find nothing. if there is anything else wrong, it will get fixed right, first time. i have never used api, but have learnt from this forum they are THE company to use for rebuilds. i hope you make the right choice and it all works out for the best.

Hi Guys - this is my first post on here......I had the bottom end go on my 05 plated subaru, a ceratin subaru garage wanted £3800 to replace it, - which was out of the question. They sourced Jap Auto Spares in Birmingham and provided me with a price of £1300 to rebuild the bottom end. This was, so I thought a good deal and accepted this.

They had the car for two weeks, and when I went to collect it, I was charged £1600 as they replaced the clutch plate too - didnt think it was needed. Air con didnt work when i had it back but the engine wasa flyer, it was smooth and quicker than previous, but it wasnt the same engine, it had been swopped.

Now - 12 months down the line, the car is holed up in a garage with a blown head gasket and oil leaks, and severely dented bottom end casing!!!

So good for paying cheap!!!

Reading this feed, I too will be contacting David at API, because there are few subaru mechanics/ garages that appear to be trustworthy!!!!!

I would save up and go with someone reputable such as API in the confidence that they will do the job properly. Definitely steer clear of Ebay for parts, there are a lot of horror stories on here of people trying to save a few £ but ending up paying nearly double to get the real deal. You get what you pay for at the end of the day.

Good Luck!

Hi,

Firstly, condolences on the fubar'd engine

Secondly: APi all the way!

You need to accept now that this IS going to be an expensive job to get one right! No ifs, no buts, rebuilding a performance car engine costs. Period!

If you can't afford this, cut your losses and sell it with a Fubar'd engine. you'll get relatively little for it BECAUSE RE-BUILDING A PERFORMANCE CAR ENGINE PROPERLY IS EXPENSIVE and a new owner will know that, but at least you won't potentially p*ss away more money getting a half arsed job on something that you then only have to sell! Remember, it's a buyer's market!!!

You could buy a used engine, BUT there is no assurance it won't get 2 weeks down the line and fail, in which case:

1) If you still have that car you then have to pay a second time (this time properly) to get it fixed so it's worth anything.
2) If you sell it to a family member (which I seem to recall you indicated you might) and it fails, don't expect to be invited to an Xmas dinner any time soon!

ALSO.

How do you know local mechanic will not find something else wrong with the car or used engine when they fit it?? If they do, there goes the price difference between APi and Mr Local Spanner Man.

If you go APi it WILL be fixed, you WILL have a warranty worth the paper it's printed on, AND it WILL be a better buy and fetch you more money at the point of sale than if the car has an engine of unknown providence in it!

Put it this way: you're about to get financially fisted, that much is inevitable. It's just a question of a) how many times b) whether they use lube c) Whether they at least give you a hug after!

Sorry!

The golden rule with Scoobies is: Do it properly first time, or for the love of god, just don't do it!!!!!

Some very wise words Paul, they should be heeded by the OP, but I doubt they will.

Glad to hear mate

I don't think anyone was trying to upset you, or be unhelpful. Rather just through experience they were strongly advising you which maybe came across in the wrong way.

Still all is well that ends well.
