No really.

If 'pressing buttons' was more demanding and liable to cause big errors we would see more exciting racing would we not, so 'demanding' is botton pressing?

Give cars manual boxes and we would see more excitement as critical errors get made.

I agree having a manual gearbox as well as all of the current switches and ***** on the steering wheel, would introduce more errors into a race. But it would be a step backwards. F1 has always been about the technology as well as the racing. Many of F1's innovations have filtered through to road cars, such as turbo technology, traction control, composite materials, semi auto gearboxes etc. It will be pretty crap if you are able to buy a road car with more advanced kit on it than an F1 car. Believe it or not Tony, there are F1 fans out there that enjoy the technical side of F1, as well as the racing.

Do you really think F1 pushed turbo technology to road cars? Porsche may have something to say about that.

However, I agree with most of what you say. Isn't there a way to make the air cleaner that comes from a rear wing?

Ofcourse not. But some turbo technology deleloped in F1 did filter it's way down to road cars.

And Tony, have a read of this:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/andrewben...s_for_the.html

It may give you an insight of the appeal of F1, other than people crashing and burning!

I think Lexus use it in one of theirs cars and have done so for a few years now, so before F1 used it. But, once the F1 boyshave reduced the size of the motor and capacitor by some 70%, I'm sure you will start to see the technology appear in fords and vauxhalls.

I was always very happy with a manual box and it never caused any significant problems. As I said earlier, you only have to get into the right gear before you get into the corner anyway.

One of the really important requirements is to have full visual conditions especially when driving close to another car. If you lose sight of the actions, especially at the speeds they are travelling, an awful lot can happen in the time you are looking somewhere else.

You have see that steering wheel above. Do you think you would be able to guarantee being able to select the right button and operate it correctly without looking? Less than a second's distraction at close quarters could cause chaos. i really do not think it is really as easy as you think to use those buttons in full safety.

Ok Les, we are starting to miss the point here.
F1 is not exciting because they have to press lots of buttons. That just sounds sad!

Did you not realise that TDW was trying to use button pressing as being far easier than say changing gear with a manual gearchange and that I was answering that both with a bit of an explanation of the likely difficulties and also with practical experience with manual controls?

Why do you say I was missing the point? And where did I say that the excitement was generated by the buttons? Surely it is easy enough to see that all the extra controls they have to be able to use constantly as well as drive the car competitively is an indication of the skill and speed of thought and coordination that it takes to drive an F1 car to the limit.

The discussion was between TDW and me!

Perhap's you might explain exactly what you mean by your post as quoted!

I can buy a car with stability and traction control that is more advanced in that regard than an F1 car.
