It's an STi with all the PPP goodies (more incidental than deliberate on my part, I actually just wanted it because of it's low milage and completely **** (meant in a nice way!) owner and colour [white]....well, when I say goodies, here is what I'd suggest you want and don't want
PPF7 wheels = Yes please!
Prodrive springs = Yes please!
Prodrive exhaust = Better options out there
Prodrive map = Better ones out there.
Prodrive fuel pump = It's just a Walbro as far as I know
So, get a well priced Std STi (get the youngest and most cared for example you can find) bung a decent exhaust and pump on there, take it to Bob and jobs a good un!
If you want more, you're going to have to knock on Davids door for some forged pistons though.
Weak pistons aside, the Hawk is a really good drive though. I'm really warming to it!
Best,
Paul

All sounds good! My plan was black (I love white too though!) Sti, Milltek, Walbro, remap, Prodrive springs, plus a few cosmetics such as powder coating the wheels anthracite and fitting a prodrive grill.
I'm thinking about simply remapping a PPP, but think it may seem a bit, well, "muffled" in the burble department - I take it you still have your Prodrive exhaust from what you say above?

Hi David have you seen any piston problems with the Bob Rawle remap? I know its hard to say because it may not be due to the remap, but I was wondering if the remap would make the car less reliable than a sti ppp as it will run at 1.35 bar with bobs remap which is on the limit for standard pistons.
The problem with the PPP STI is that I found it run out of puff quickly when it got above 5500 revs so ideally I would like Bob to work his magic!!
In order to gain the power advantage by fitting a miltex exhaust would I have to replace all of the PPP system.
Thanks again everyones advice has been great.

Any pirated copy of software is never as good as the real thing.
BUT, more importantly, it has allowed the dicks of this world to become ' mappers '.
I have sat beside Pat Herborn, Bob Rawle, Paul Blamire and occasionally Steve Simpson when they are mapping, for nearly 10 years and l would not attempt to map a car.
I freely admit that most of what goes on in a mapping session is above my skill level. Others have seen it done once or twice and then become "experts." Sure, many times in life, you have to learn your craft, but practicing mapping when a several thousand pound engine is at stake is a bit of a stretch.
How'd it be if you went skydiving with an instructor that had seen it done a few times? Full of confidence ? I doubt it.
Mapping is a bit like engine building really. I was trained at Ford on Major units a LONG time ago. Just about anyone can put an engine together; VERY FEW can build an engine.

^^^ Clear and concise answer on mapping. There are mappers and there ECU flashers, thats my take on it.
Going back to the original post, my local dealer has changed a few 2.5,s now due to failed ringlands. They recently had an RB320 in for a warranty shortblock exchange.
That was good news for me as i got the salvage. A 2.5 shortblock minus a piston with low milage.
@ David, what is your opinion of the factory 2.5 rod strength, some say they are better quality than eagle?

I couldn't wait for the remap (and have a big update planned with David) so I just remapped the std PPP.
Although you should keep the Prodrive wheels, springs (these are very good) and any of the nice cosmetic bits though.... (if they've had them fitted) I have some lovely flaps (oooerr) and a really nice chin spoiler, which makes multistory car parks interesting!

I'd be waiting for the bang.
No standard rod will ever be as good a forged steel rod. Most steel rods are made in China these days. Arrow are not, but the price reflects the fact that they are made in the UK.
We have the APi standard length and stroker length steel rods making well over 500 hp at a budget price. Not too excited by Manley, the ones we have seen seem inconsistent for quality. They work sure, but I wouldn't spec them myself.

Bob is known as "the guru" for good reason in the Subaru community. I'd wager the car running safer after he's had his hands on it. I've always used him and in 6 years including a UK Turbo mapped to 1.5bar I've never had an issue.
The PPP map is actually very conservative, Bob will ring the turbo in sooner and harder and allow it to hold on for longer. You are going to have to accept that the car will still have done the best of its work by 6k though. The turbo isn't man enough to flow sufficient air for the bigger engine's needs at higher rpm as I understand it and to go bigger on the turbo you'll need to strengthen the engine internals.
Yes, ideally the whole PPP system needs to go, BUT if you can't afford that, mine made 348bhp and 380ft lbs on the prodrive stuff so it's not the end of the world if it has to stay.
It's a quiet system though.....I quite like that although certainly wouldn't object to a bit more of a prominent burble!

That was what I was trying to weigh up Paul - I do like a good burble though!

Having a quiet centre section and DP is no bad thing: makes the car refined AND sound nice!

That's an other option.
Have heard they're not as good quality as Milltek, but I guess as long as it fits the car and lasts then it's fine! Think all of the exhausts I mentioned are quiet-ish?

I looked at Revolution. A bit of googling and someone on another forum was saying that they found it just too quiet - ie just as quiet as OE STi zorst. So by the sound of it, Milltek = more burble than Revolution?
